Black Walnuts

Okay, so I know Black Walnut tree's are toxic to some animals, but the actual walnuts once harvested are safe for parrots, yes?

My friend has 2 trees and I can grab as many as I want (there are LOADS!) But i want to make sure they're OK once properly dried.

If they are safe, my birds are about to score.

I don't know much about the safety of black walnuts. But if its going to be that much work, will it be worth it?

Nuts ARE Expensive!! It's worth a shot. She has 2 trees that are loaded, I can probably get a few gallons of them. Maybe run them over with my truck to break the hulls on them.

I don't know anything about using black walnuts for birds. I do know the shells are like trying to pry open a solid steel ball bearing! I guess if you have the time to devote to harvesting & drying them it is well worth it. Free nuts are hard to beat!

When I was a teenager in the early 70s, my Grandparents moved next door to us & there was a 15ft tall huge Black Walnut tree in their back yard. My Grandma hated that tree because she couldn't use the nuts. She put up with that tree for 10 yrs. In her 80s with one prosthetic leg, she chopped that darn tree down with a hand axe! It did take her 1 1/2 yrs to get it felled and she was barely 5ft tall. She also chopped the whole thing up into pieces to be carried off. My hubby & I lived in another town by then & came home on weekends whenever we could. We carried a bunch of the tree off for her. She was one tough little Czech woman who worked side by side with my grandpa clearing Mesquite trees off their farm when they first married. I get my tenacious personality from her & my Mom!
