Used Cage & Stand: $140.00
Gas To Get There & Back: $25.00
Road Trip With The Hubby & Kids: PRICELESS!

So we went on a little road trip last Tuesday to check out a small cage and tree stand for Quincy. It was on craigslist but was an 1 1/2 hours away! But we live in Vermont, to get anywhere it's a road trip so we are used to it. I got the cage and stand for $140 bucks. She was asking $200! I thought this was pretty good as the cage is in great condition and the stand is, too.

We currently have a cheaper Midwest cage for Quincy at work. I wanted something that looked nicer and that would get him up off the floor as the Midwest cage goes all the way to the floor. This cage is small but we allow Quincy to come in and out of his cage freely while at work because he is behind the counter. About 5 feet behind my work computer. It measures 5 feet tall and it has 24"x20"x40" living space. It is a Kaytee cage. I didn't even know they made cages! I'm not sure the brand of the tree stand.

I have a Midwest cage for Savannah that her previous owners gave us and I plan to put both Midwest cages on our porch at home so the birds can hang out outside on nice days!

So do you think I got a decent deal?

Also, I've scrubbed both down with soap and water and a little bleach. I rinsed them thoroughly. They also sat in the hot sun yesterday for 2 hours. I also steamed cleaned them today for an extra precaution. Any other suggestions of anything else I should do to clean these before my little buddy uses them? The previous owners bird has passed away quite a few years ago and she just has had it in storage. She is moving to Alaska and didn't want to drag it with her. She didn't know how old her bird was and thinks it was old age. But I want to be cautious anyway!

This seems like a great deal, and you are so lucky to be able to have your fids at work! I recently quit my job and started my own business so that I could be home with my kids.

I thought it was a great deal, too! She knew we traveled out of our way, so I'm glad she came down to $140.00! I do feel very fortunate to have my fids at work. I am building Savannah up slowly and I bring Quincy in when she comes in. Right now it's once a week but I hope to have them both with me 2 to 3 times a week. They need breaks because there is a lot of activity at my store and they need at least one day to rest in between! I have the largest candy store in VT!

What do you do?

Unbelievable find! I am jealous of both. Just be sure that the entire wheels are dry. That area can rust quickly and hide the moisture. Congrats.

I wouldn't have thought of that! I will be sure to make sure the wheels are dry. Thanks for the tip!

I am an artist, I sculpt, and make jewelry, I also ride horses, and am hopefully going to start training a horse or two as well. A candy store, that sounds like fun!

I think their great [im sure the playstand had been expensive] pays to research :)

Thanks ladies. I did do some searching online and thought it was a good deal. The cage was actually bigger then the ones I compared it to online. She gave me the height and that's it. I didn't actually measure it until yesterday.

Sounds like it was worth the 3 hour round trip! Sometimes I think I'm crazy when I travel to buy big items! I've done that a lot with store fixtures. But even accounting for gas and time we've saved 100's & even thousands. I love a good bargain! :D

A good scrub down and letting it sit in the sun will be fine. Sunlight can do as much as bleach to kill Bactria. Great deal!

Thanks Shelly. I was hoping what I've done was enough! :)

Excellent deal, Blanca! I've been searching for a larger cage for Sassy and the deals can be hard to find, I can't really afford, right now to pay full price of a new one so I will continue my search of used ones! Congrats on your find!

Mare - Just keep looking and I'm sure something will turn up. I had to travel an hour and a half, but I don't think that is too bad. Good luck in your search and I hope you find something soon! At least it's a replacement you are looking for so you are not in a rush. That was Quincy's store cage situation. He had one but I just wanted something better!

I'm one lucky birdie mama! LOL! Thanks Bokka. :)

They are here with me today and Quincy is hanging out in his new cage. I figure after a few visits, he'll warm up to it. I will post a pick later today!

Here is a pic of Quincy in his new cage. It's only his second day so he hasn't explored yet. But I know he will in time!

Lucky bird! Do you allow him to come and go at his will? Does he fly?

Blancaej
06-15-2013, 02:03 AM
Yes I do Mare. He does fly but he's clipped. He is very good at work and stays on his cage. A little stubborn sometimes and won't always step up for me off his cage. But I trust him to come in and out as he likes.

Love the cage & Quincy looks like he is saying, "Do you like my new digs?"

Quincy is a very lucky boy to get to go to work with you. If only I could bring mine to work with me. It would sure make going to work much more enjoyable for me at least. :th_biggrin:

Being self employed has it's own advantages and disadvantages, but I wouldn't change it for the world. The advantages are awesome when I can do things like this! I certainly feel the that the pros way out way the cons for me! Wouldn't change my life for nothin'! LOL! :th_biggrin:

He is adjusting slowly. He came out of the cage last time he was here at the store. So that was great!
