Ok, she is 10 years old, but we just confirmed she is a girl! LOL!

As we are getting closer to bringing Coqui home, I thought it would be nice to share her story with everyone.

Coqui, the b&g I am adopting in October was born and raised in Puerto Rico. The current owners MIL owned Coqui. She was given Coqui by her husband, Linda's FIL, when Linda's MIL was 83 years old! Coqui was left in an outside aviary and was only visited once a day to be fed every morning. She was left alone all day and night until the next morning. Day in and day out. Her only visitors was the gardners and other workers.

Linda went to Puerto Rico with her husband 2 to 4 times a year and would visit with Coqui while visiting because she was bored and needed something to do. Well Coqui bonded to her. When Linda's MIL turned 93 (and decided she was too old to care for her) she decided to give Coqui to Linda because Coqui liked her. Linda agreed to take Coqui because she didn't want her to go from home to home to home. They brought her back to the US (with a minimal health check). They gave it a try, but it was clear they were not bird people.

Linda has had Coqui since December and has worked with Coqui over the last few months to get her accustomed to normal life living inside and with people. She has done awesome!

Linda was told she was female but had no proof. I asked them if they would take Coqui to the vet ahead of time, get all the necessary blood work and get her sexed for me. I told them I would pay for it. Coqui is 3.5 hours away and I didn't want to have to take her to the vet after a long trip to my house. They agreed even though it was an hour drive to the nearest vet. But the good news is, they saw an avian vet who did a great job with the check up.

I just got news back from the results of the check up and Coqui is healthy as a lark. All her tests results were normal and she tested negative for disease! So this is great news. And now I know for sure she is a female, too! :th_biggrin:

I am still waiting to get an official date to pick her up in October. I am trying to wait patiently! LOL! If I had a date, I could pin point exactly how long it will be, but with out one it makes it hard to plan and it feels like forever! Ugh! Oh well, it will come soon enough I guess!

For some reason I thought Coqui was a baby! I know how hard waiting is and I had NO where near the wait you do!

Don't feel bad Shelly, I think Mare thought Coqui was a baby until recently as well! LOL! I agreed to adopt Coqui July 4th. So it's a very long wait!

Thanks Elizabeth. It's good to know she is healthy!

One thing I didn't explain is why I have to wait so long to adopt Coqui. Linda's MIL is coming to visit in October and they want her to see Coqui one last time. Her MIL is 94 now. And so this may be her last time visiting from Puerto Rico. So I agreed to wait so the MIL can see her. They are not telling her that she is being adopted by someone else.

Great Idea to get the vet thing done ahead of time. Im sure she will be so happy to have "Bird people" and bird friends . Glad you posted why the long wait [was just going to ask].

I was wondering about the reason for the long wait also. Sweet they want MIL to see her one last time, but what if the dear lady lives another 6 to 10 years? Will you have to 'farm' Coqui out each year to keep MIL happy? :th_LOL: I know, I am just being funny, not really expecting you will be required to do something so extreme.

That is a bitter~sweet story about Coqui. I say that because she didn't have a terrible life in Puerto Rico, but it wasn't the best for a parrot either. Then if you think about it, you would never have gotten the chance to be Coqui's forever parront if the MIL had been a better parront or if Linda had been a bird person. I am just glad you & Coqui found each other & she will be yours in a matter of weeks/days!!:th_hug8:

LOL! I hope that won't be a stipulations! The MIL is 94 and they are having a harder and harder time convincing her to come visit. So this may be her last visit to the states.

I agree, it is bitter sweet for little Coqui girl. It really wasn't the ideal situation for poor Coqui in Puerto Rico, it's too bad it didn't work out with MIL or Linda, but I'm not complaining and am happy to make her part of my flock! :th_biggrin: I am definitely looking forward to giving her a more enriched environment.

I think you are right Wendy. With the Linnies coming in about a week, I will be busy settling them in. Then it will be Coqui's turn! :)

I know you must be on pins and needles with this waiting. At least you have an end point now. Cannot wait to see photos of her.

Steve - Yes! By leaps and bounds! :th_biggrin:

Dianne - Definitely on pins and needles, but luckily I have other things distracting me at the moment. Which is helping the time go by quickly!
