Ok, she is 10 years old, but we just confirmed she is a girl! LOL!
As we are getting closer to bringing Coqui home, I thought it would be nice to share her story with everyone.
Coqui, the b&g I am adopting in October was born and raised in Puerto Rico. The current owners MIL owned Coqui. She was given Coqui by her husband, Linda's FIL, when Linda's MIL was 83 years old! Coqui was left in an outside aviary and was only visited once a day to be fed every morning. She was left alone all day and night until the next morning. Day in and day out. Her only visitors was the gardners and other workers.
Linda went to Puerto Rico with her husband 2 to 4 times a year and would visit with Coqui while visiting because she was bored and needed something to do. Well Coqui bonded to her. When Linda's MIL turned 93 (and decided she was too old to care for her) she decided to give Coqui to Linda because Coqui liked her. Linda agreed to take Coqui because she didn't want her to go from home to home to home. They brought her back to the US (with a minimal health check). They gave it a try, but it was clear they were not bird people.
Linda has had Coqui since December and has worked with Coqui over the last few months to get her accustomed to normal life living inside and with people. She has done awesome!
Linda was told she was female but had no proof. I asked them if they would take Coqui to the vet ahead of time, get all the necessary blood work and get her sexed for me. I told them I would pay for it. Coqui is 3.5 hours away and I didn't want to have to take her to the vet after a long trip to my house. They agreed even though it was an hour drive to the nearest vet. But the good news is, they saw an avian vet who did a great job with the check up.
I just got news back from the results of the check up and Coqui is healthy as a lark. All her tests results were normal and she tested negative for disease! So this is great news. And now I know for sure she is a female, too! :th_biggrin:
I am still waiting to get an official date to pick her up in October. I am trying to wait patiently! LOL! If I had a date, I could pin point exactly how long it will be, but with out one it makes it hard to plan and it feels like forever! Ugh! Oh well, it will come soon enough I guess!
