Female Budgie laying eggs without male

    Hi,

My name is Josh and I have a female budgie named Ellie.

Ellie was continuously looking for small places to hide in such as tissue boxes and drawers, so I decided to buy her a breeding box.

She immediately hopped in and made herself comfortable, she has now started to rip up newspaper to fill the box.

She is now laying eggs (without a male), she has layed around 6 eggs in the past week or so.

She is becoming very aggressive, biting me very hard and chirping loudly when she hears noises around the box as she is attempting to incubate the eggs. This is unusual as she is normally a very loving and affectionate.

Is this normal, or should I remove the box from her environment?

    Appreciate any help.

    Josh.

Hi Josh. Welcome to the forum. You should remove the nesting box. She will keep laying eggs and risk calcium depletion or eggbinding. The trick will be to remove all nesting materials as she finds them. If she continues laying eggs, remove them and replace with dummy eggs.
Start regulating her awake/sleep cycle. Cover her cage at night between 7-8 pm and uncover the cage between 7-8 am.
Don’t feed her any soft/mushy foods for now.
When she settles down, just touch her head, nowhere else. She is very hormonal right now and touching her anywhere else will increase this.
Hopefully, she will settle down and become the sweet bird she was.
