Dipping the food in the water bowl

    Hey Everyone,

Since summer has come I've noticed Lady seems to dip her nuts into her water bowl quite often. Do your birds dip? Do they dip all year around and more so in the warmer weather? I know Lady likes to drink fruit juice and veggie juice when I have some to spare so I was thinking it was a Lady thing but now that she is dipping more often and it seems to mainly be the pistachios and walnuts I'm wondering if any one else has seen their bird do this and how often.

She gets fresh water three times a day unless I'm home then I lose count.

Yes, some of my birds will dip their pellets and others dip their vegetables. I don't think the weather is a factor here. Some of the birds don't dip at all. Go figure

Casper, a blue fronted Amazon. Loves banana. Hates plastic bags and red coats.
Casper considers the water dish a waste of space, despite being refreshed daily because you're supposed to it never gets used. Occasionally his tail feathers get dipped in accidentally when he is attacking his cuttlefish.
He seems to get all the moisture he needs from fruit like apple which he squishes up and spits out the pulp. Or pear, that's nice and juicy and makes his poop runny if he eats too much.
On the rare occasions the weather is hot here he gets sprayed with a mist trigger bottle and may drink a couple of drips but if we offer him water he acts as if we are mad.

Ah! Lady has discovered the joy of dipping . Be thankful it's just her food. Salsa dumps everything in his water. And believe me, it can quickly become a BIG, disgustingly sloppy mess! Salsa and Maynard are my two dippers/dunkers. Zaf never dunks. And Jack very seldom dunks.

Rosie is a huge soup maker. She does not just dip. Everything goes in the water dish and it seems most things stay. In all 3 of the areas that she uses daily. Yick!!!

Oh I see it's not just for water as she often puts her toys in her food dish. I was thinking it had something to due with the hot weather but now I will have to keep an eye when fall comes around.

Funny that Salsa, Maynard and Rosie all like to put things in their water bowls too! Sounds like maybe it's a Macaw thing?

Well with Casper not needing so much water to drink I'm guessing it is a Macaw thing or maybe Lady just discovered it is best to have a bit of water to help those dry nuts go down easier.
