Genetically Modified Food for our Birds?

I do not think we will know if that food we feed our birds has genetically altered ingredients unless we make our bird's food from scratch. Just FYI the top 10 modified foods are: rice, grains, Papaya and Banana, Artificial additives, preservatives and sweeteners, Potatoes, Corn, Tomatoes, Squash, Oils, Salmon, Peas, Alfalfa, Pork and Honey.
http://seattleorganicrestaurants.com...odified-foods/ If we pass labeling laws in the US we have a better chance of knowing. Another unknown is how will this type of food effect our birds and ourselves in the long run.

Sassy Goffin's girl, she IS Sassy Amigo, male umbrella cockatoo Chip! The cockatiel! The sweet, sweet Jellybean!
Yes, good question. We are the guinea pigs, so to speak, for all the "gunk" that goes into our bodies. I've read that the corn we eat is over 90% modified. My birds LOVE corn, Amigo's favorite thing in the world (besides me ) when I think about it, I hate feeding it to him

I was thinking the other day on organics! If they use cow manure to fertilize with and say the cow has been given shots of growth hormones or other chemicals to produce more of whatever, well if the cow is altered then the manure used would be altered so how could the product grow be truly organic??????

Here is some reading on the subject: http://www.carolinafarmstewards.org/...Production.pdf http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/201...-on-manure-use http://www.rodalesorganiclife.com/garden/manure

As I read to research your question I find the FDA has regulations in place for the use of manure in organic farming. It seems many farmers use a combination of green manure and composted manure. Some do not even use cow manure but use turkey manure. Composted manure heats up so high it kills many of the bad guys.

GMO's are indeed an ominous concern. They insidiously infiltrate our food system at increasing levels. And it's all driven by corporations lusting for greater profits. At present, USDA Certified Organics is the best way to avoid as much GMO material as possible. The USDA imposes strict guidelines against intermingling GMO materials with foods that will be sold under the "USDA Organic" label. This stipulation extends to the suppliers of food producers and to the suppliers of those suppliers. Any soil that food components are grown in and any fertilizers used, as well as any feeds that food producing animals are fed, must comply with USDA Organic requirements in order to permit sale of the end product as USDA Organic. Any violation will result in the organic supplier loosing its certification to distribute or sell products under the "USDA Organic" label. And once lost, a food producer is no longer qualified to distribute or sell as "USDA Organic" again.

Beyond the above, the voting ballot may be our only chance to gain an implementation of informative labeling on all food products, as well as perhaps a way to curtail the proliferation of GMO's within our food system. Unfortunately, however, the latter is not as likely to occur due to corporate monies and power and the interplay of those elements with political corruption.
