    ABVP-board certified avian vets

I have two vets, Jose Biaschoechea in Mt Pleasant SC, who is one of the newest diplomates, and Rhoda Stevenson in Jacksonville, FL, one of the first group to achieve that status, now 20 years ago. Rhoda's hospital, Exotic Bird Hospital is fabulous, and she has three full time avians-and-exotics-only vets on staff with 24/7/365 emergency vet on call, who will, if need be, open the hospital for you at any time. (Including Christmas Eve: I had a beak bleed I couldn't get stopped and called her close to 6 p.m. on Dec. 24th, and she was willing to be there if we had to go there.

That's an extremely good point, Judith!

For those who may not know, the AAV (Association of Avian Veterinarians) indicator boasted by some veterinarians does not denote a certification. It merely indicates a membership in the AAV organization. It's the ABVP (American Board of Veterinary Practitioners) reference displayed by certain vets that indicates an actual certification. Any veterinarian can pay a fee to become an AAV member. But to obtain an ABVP-avian certification a vet must go through years of arduous training and examination specific to avian medicine. As Judith points out, there are far fewer ABVP-avian certified vets than there are vets with AAV memberships. In most cases it's usually best for the health and safety of our birds if they receive their health assessments and medical treatments from ABVP-avian certified veterinarians. However, this is not to say that good and capable non-certified avian veterinarians don't exist as well. It's just good information to possess.

Yes, there are presently just over 100 ABVP-board certified avian vets, and some of those are researchers or pathologists who are not in public practice. The AAV is a great organization, and I'd not even consider a vet for my birds who didn't belong, but an AAV certificate on the wall doesn't equal a "board certified" avian vet.

Very true. And due to the finite number of certified avian veterinary specialists, in some areas it's not possible to locate a well-qualified avian vet within travel distance. As such, it may be a good idea to check avian vet availability status in your area prior to the emergence of a situation requiring such a specialist. In this way, a plan can be established well ahead of the need.

    Mango, 2yo Male Sun Conure
The vet I've been using for the past 5 years isn't listed on the AAV website, but he really knows his information. He is also the first to admit if he doesn't know or if the needs are beyond his care. There are only 2 AAV vets in my state and they both live about 3 hours away and are professors/emergency vets at the University of Tennessee Veterinary School.

I have a lot of faith in my vet even if he isn't AAV certified. He has answered many a phone call with me freaking out about my bird. I'll never forget the first experience I had with a broken blood feather...

I was staying in a hotel in Arkansas because I had moved there but hadn't found an apartment yet. Mango was molting for the first time and we were in a strange place. He was playing on his cage when I looked over to see blood running down his side. I flipped out! I lifted his wing and saw it was a feather that had been broken. I called my vet at 2am crying and freaking out because I was in another state with no one and I didn't even have the emergency number for the new vet I had found online before moving. I was freaking out. He talked me through pulling the feather and assured me it was going to be alright.

And actually he was the one who wrapped up Mango's foot when Mango broke his toe. I was wearing a shirt that had some tiny holes in it and his toe got caught. If I remember right something spooked him and he tried to fly away and broke his toe! I felt soooo bad. But I have to say he looked pretty cute and pitiful with his foot in a bandage...

Tiffany: There are many good vets who don't belong to AAV, and certainly plenty who are not ABVP-avian board certified. While good unaffiliated vets exist, there's a greater likelihood that those vets who do belong to AAV are accustomed to treating a significant number of companion birds on a regular basis. Vets who don't belong to AAV, however, may or may not treat a lot of birds. So it's just kind of an assurance that a vet is used to treating birds.

The ABVP-avian designator, then, is far less commonly seen and denotes an actual board certification in avian medicine. When someone has access to an ABVP-avian vet, it's a near guarantee that he or she is quite capable and talented in matters of diagnosing and treating our feathered companions.

If you find a vet who has shown competence, knowledge, and dependability, it doesn't much matter what the letters are after the "DVM". I'm glad to know you have a good and trusted vet

Merlin & Charlie the Senegals, Brucie & Lucie the Budgies!
I have two vets I'd like to 'nominate', both in the UK.

    Ian Mostyn BVM&S CertZooMed MRCVS
I took my splay legged senegal to him and he was just... beyond fantastic. His wife who joint owns the practice is also an 'exotics' specialist and they both are very well educated on proper bird care. I trust Ian (no actual experience with his wife though.) They have two practices, one in Tottington UK, and one in Harwood, UK.
    https://penninevets.co.uk/

    Tottington
    1 Bury Road, Tottington, Bury, BL8 3HD
    Telephone 01204 886655
    Fax 01204 880077
    email vets@penninevets.co.uk

    Harwood
    175 Longsight, Harwood, Bolton BL2 3JF
    Telephone 01204 609060
    Fax 01204 403478
    email harwood@penninevets.co.uk

I don't use Ian as a vet anymore as I've moved away and he's too far to travel to now, but he was fantastic.

My current vet and nurse (she is so important to the care I wouldn't dare miss her out!) are at "Avian Veterinary Services"

Vet practice purely for birdies. Richard Jones (BVSc MSc MRCVS), and RVN Carli Dodd are just angels in disguise. It's plonked right next to a falconry area and despite it being a royal pain in the butt to get to, I won't go anywhere else now. Their prices are fair, the consultations are longer than usual to ensure our fids arn't hiding anything and we can really have a chance to talk over anything concerning us. (since they're so good at hiding things!). Each time my guys go, (nail trim usually) they get a full wellness check which includes taking their weight, inspecting them head to toe etc. Merlin always has his splayed leg looked at too. They have all the latest fancy equipment, they even do 'pre purchase' checks to try and help you match yourself with an appropriate species if you're looking for a bird but don't know what. Feather imping, surgery, some in house testing...

They're both so enthusiastic about birds, they make you feel so comfortable. Even when I rushed out there so close to closing time in tears because Merlin was throwing up (not regurgitating as normal) they were just so calm, looked him over promptly, asked me questins about his general state of health and got to the bottom of it in no time. I was sent home with meds, a happy birdy who wasn't in the least bit stressed and with a smile on my face knowing I had those two just a phonecall away!

I could go on and on about these two but they are just fantastic, they also do out of hours, so if you really need them in the middle of the night, it's okay!

If you're in the area, go register with these guys now!

I'll shutup now, here's the address...
