For those within or near the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, a quality avian veterinary practice with board certified specialists finally exists. It is Avian & Exotic Veterinary Care in Northeast Portland. Its owner is Lisa Harrenstien, DVM, Dipl. ACZM (denoting her status as a board certified specialist in zoological medicine). Dr. Harrenstien was a veterinarian at the Oregon Zoo for 13 years. In addition to Dr. Harrenstien, AEVC is also home to Paul Gibbins, DVM, MS, Dipl. ABVP (Reptile/Amphibian). Dr. Gibbons was an ABVP (Avian) certified diplomate from 2002 to 2012 and he currently sees birds.
I recently had the opportunity to visit AEVC and Dr. Harrenstien for an issue with one of my macaws. By comparison to many of the other veterinary clinics I have dealt with, AEVC is clearly a cut above. Moreover, it is the only veterinary clinic in the State of Oregon with veterinarians who are (or have been) board certified to diagnose and treat companion parrots. My experience at AEVC was impressive. They were professional, knowledgeable, compassionate, and competent.
