It has been very busy here at the rescue. With the holiday seasons life is busier for everyone and some things seem to get left behind.

Very soon...

It has been very busy here at the rescue. With the holiday seasons life is busier for everyone and some things seem to get left behind.

Very soon one of our heart touching stories of Rugie a Salmon Crested Cockatoo will be posted in our local newspaper as pet of the day. I am hoping rugie can find a loving and accepting home from being featured in the article.

Tomorrow two Indian Ringneck parakeets will be going home to a very nice young lady that will cherish these guys for a long time, I am sure of that!

Coming after the holiday seasons a CAG named toby will more than likely be headed to his forever home with a man that made an instant bond with him. The guy has just the right attitude to work with toby and supply him with a life of love.

Lilly a medium Suplhur Crested Cockatoo was adopted and will be headed home Jan. 16. She was a very nervous bird and is very deserving of a great home in which she can flourish into a social happy cockatoo:).

Currently we have a ton of cockatoos and love birds that are looking for a home all of which can be found or seen posted usually daily on this page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-D...88?ref=tn_tnmn

We have received a huge amount of cage donations and plenty of other helpful stuff we are so thankful for!

I believe that is all I have to update on as far as adoptions/ donations.

Next I would like to talk about Diamond, she is a real Diamond in the rough. She is a wild caught African Grey that needs a ton of work. Yesterday I spent some time working with her and moving her into a better suited cage. Hopefully in the coming months she can calm down and learn to accept human interaction. She was left outside almost year round and expected to breed on a horrible diet and in a horrible environment. One night a predator came around and managed to kill her mate, but Diamond she survived. We where called the next day to pick up Diamond and another Grey that had been attacked and injured. Sadly the other grey died before we had a chance to take him to the vets. Diamond is with us and has a lot of issues trusting and being around people. She growls almost constantly when its anyone else but me and a select few other people. I have begun working with her on a day by day basis starting on Friday. Hopefully within a Month we can see Diamond ready to be adopted and find a loving person for this poor soul. I cannot imagine what I would be like to be ripped away from the wild as a young bird and thrown into so many deadly situations. My heart truly does bleed for this one!

Until next time!

Kind Regards,

Ok guys back for some more rescue updating!! Pickle is in the process of scheduling his home visit and should be going home this week! I will update you all about this once we hear more.

Oscar is doing well and still sticking to his recovery process. He is such a strong little bird!

We took in two parakeets today, someone in a dire situation that had to move and couldn't take the birds with them came to our front door. We helped this kind person out and now have these two great birds to find a forever home for. They are already playing and talking up a storm!

We may have two salmon crested cockatoos coming in within the coming weeks. These two seem very interesting and we hope we can help the in need owner!

I have been working with the one wild caught grey that was relinquished to us and she is adapting slowly. It will take her time, but she is learning that my hands will never hurt her like she has been hurt before.

Tomorrow is the last day a great volunteer of ours will be here as she is moving away. So we wish her luck in her future journeys

As I was writing this my most crippled bird fiesta the catalina macaw somehow got off a hanging swing onto another birds cage. even with the abuse she received and the injury she will live with forever she still manages such trouble!:)

Have a nice night everyone and their flocks.

kind regards,

Hey everyone it has been a few days! It has been busy down here and I am sure everyone here has been as well!

Pickle had his photo in the paper and we got a huge amount of inquires from this. Pickle now has a waiting line and has possibly opened the door for a few other birdies to find their forever homes!

We have gotten in 3 cockatoos and 2 greys in the past week. The 2 greys are a pair and the male got its beak ripped off by a large macaw. It is the top beak that is ripped off and this grey was rescued from a hoarding situation. We are hoping he will have a speedy recovery and he is so far doing great! Sadly one persons neglect has disabled this poor bird forever. He will never be able to be a bird again really.. The worst thing is he is a wild caught bird from years ago and surprisingly this has made his willingness to survive 110% better.

A blue and gold macaw we adopted out recently has been doing great. We are receiving messages and emails all the time about baby!

I took in a goffins cockatoo recently named pearl. She was suppose to be a bird that would come upon someones death but has came sooner due to living issues. Pearl is adjusting well and i just adore her. She has filled the void of losing my precious mini macaw koko recently to a seizure.

This is all I have for now and hope to be back with another post soon!

Kind regards,

Hey everyone. Sorry I have not posted an entry in awhile.. We(I) have been very busy and writing the blog is not something I wanted to do with the nature of the busy. It was a negative week in the rescue world as far as trying to help someone goes. This someone has neglected to get help and neglected the birds in the process. Enough of that topic because I would rather not dwell on it:).

My day today was a decent one with the birds. All my guys were ripping and roaring to get out! I went up to the rescues and an african grey named dinky told me to stop.. I laughed and said I guess you don't want food and water.. His response was oohh. Sometimes these guys make me laugh.

This morning I also went out to a pet store to take a photo of pickle a cherry headed conure to be put in the local news. He will be put in as pet of the week! Keep look on the facebook page to see more about that as I assume that will be the best way to communicate this!

We also received a pair of greys that the male recently had his beak bit off.. So we are dealing with him and adapting him to his disability that has been sadly pushed on him. This guy has a huge instinct to live and is adapting so well, we are proud of him!

If you didn't see on the facebook page we have a very nice java tree being donated as well! The thing is huge.. we also got a cargo net and some bird dishes donated which was great. I just wanted to give a mention as we really love it:).

I like to sit back and think at the end of my day, at this point I think the positives and negatives.. One positive is always these birds I am so blessed to work with these guys and have the rescue. It is a lot of work but pays off everyday.

I was working on things a lot today so my bird stories are kind of minimal:(!

cya guys soon! Thank you for stopping by the blog.

kind regards,

Hello everyone and welcome back to another blog entry!! I hope everyone is enjoying these and I am trying my best to write interesting things daily.

Yesterday night someone called me asking me to house two birds while their house was cleaned, They had adopted one from us and had another previously. I said sure no problem I'd love to see the greenwing and sun conure again! The greenwings attitude is just perfect she is a singer, talker, lover and everything anyone could wish for. Honestly when she came in I wanted to keep her, but she was just to amazing to keep around. She was a friend of mines bird I ended up rehoming her because she is amazing and keeping fiesta my disabled catalina. The greenwing is so much fun I was happy to see her around again. Sadly they will be moving away and I won't be seeing that bird in person for a very very long time if ever. It is sad, but for the best!

We had wicked thunderstorms around here today and that kinda threw the birds off big time, but we still got the usual play time in. Some people ask how much time We or I spend in that room a night. The answer is whatever it takes, On top of feeding and watering which I give attention while doing. Some nights my guys demand more then others. Some nights they are fine on play gyms other nights O boy my arms better be ready!

I am fine with ether type of night I do enjoy nights where my arms better be ready, and some nights I enjoy just being in there talking and playing. I am trying to push for when I am doing computer work to spend the time out there instead of in my computer room. I own a laptop so i'm not sure why I have a mental road block about it lol.

Tonight I'd also like to share about the weird bond I have in my room. My senegal and amazon are tightly bonded and it is very odd. I look over and see this African bird bonded with a south american bird and just scratch my head. Truth is I know the answer I scratch my head about the fact rocky the senegel was attacked by other birds. Yet he has let his guard down to trust babe:). It is wonderful to see and be a part of these two and their bond. These guys don't get much mention because they are easy going, but I wanted to bring them up tonight!

Another funny moment while i was spending time with cooper my mini macaw he was preening my facial hair, He was kinda stand off-ish about it at first then was like heck those whiskers need preening!

that will be all for tonight, remember to drop by the facebook page for the rescue and precisely parrots!

kind regards,

I then had to run out to get parrot food which wasn't to bad. Its always a hefty bill as always that is why we push for adoptions/ donations to support these guys!

I figured I could share some stories about my guys from time to time so here is one. I was playing with taylor the one blue and gold and he is a rough character. He is very playful and does know his limits. He kept bonking me on the head and so on. So I said step up ya little pester. He stepped up in a hurry and flipped upside down. I was extremely surprised... I mean he flips upside down on his cage top like a goof but this was different. I by reaction put my hand under his back and he just played and joked around. It was a cool experience to have him be that comfortable with me.. As we know the belly is a sensitive spot for any animal and requires trust to be left exposed or touched.

We adopted out three budgies and two amazons today and That puts us up to 6 for the weekend:). Hopefully people will get interested in the two greys and the conure we have here!

I spent some time with the birdies cleaned all the dishes extra good and spent some time hanging extra toys. I had some stuff laying around that needed destroyed because i have had it way to long! I gave it to the siblings Taylor and Toby to tear it up. They made a big mess for me to clean up later haha.

I can't say anything about this weekend has been disappointing!

On top of all this I got a great work out and made myself some nutri bullet shakes for tomorrow! Now the birds and me shall settle down to roost for the evening/night.

Sorry everyone for the lack of posts! We were very busy getting ready for today.. Today was an adoption/ yard sale day for us and we made out great!!!

The day started early with setting up everything, That was all done by about 8 A.M. which was starting time. Through out the day we had a lot of birds outside enjoying the sun and great weather. One of the many was rugie the rescued salmon crested cockatoo that has had a rough past. He looked just sitting and soaking it all in! Not only was the yard sale rewarding but having a good day with the birds was even better.

We also adopted out a blue and gold macaw and have some parakeets going home tomorrow! On top of that we received a cage donation which was a huge help.

Today was a mild day in my world, My day consisted of work, working out and the birds. I am huge on obtaining a very healthy lifestyle whether mental or physical. Now onto the more important part of my day... the BIRDS!!

Today was really just a normal day with the rescues and my guys. We had a volunteer over and offered some help cleaning and such and did an amazing job. The volunteer met one of the two new greys and seen how a bird that has never been handled acts.. especially a grey they have that horrible growl! We are in huge need of names for the two greys, we believe we will name the one sage we need another name though! So if you have any ideas please comment!

Now for my guys nothing to interesting happened.. well I mean not for me i'm used to them goofing off! Rueben thought he might try and visit the siblings I didn't really trust that so quickly put myself in the middle. I trust some birds with others, but rueben well he is to young and full of energy for many birds. He wants in the worst way to be friends he is just to much:p.

I know sometime this week I need to organize and get rid of somethings My room seems very cluttered to me right now and I dislike that feeling. I as well need to clean some grates which is my least favorite aspect of bird cages. If I can get away with it they get paper on them, but some of my guys just have to chew it all up!

This is really all for tonight, hopefully days soon will be more eventful. Today was very humid and storms were about so not much action! Keep in touch guys and please feel free to comment and check out the rescues facebook page for updates on the ins and outs! https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-D...78523569103588

The Duswalt Foundations Blog!

So I have said about doing this for awhile... A blog about the rescue and my personal birds and day ins and outs. I would like to introduce the rescue and myself. The rescue is The Duswalt Foundation Exotic Bird Rescue we are a non- profit, no kill rescue that is all about the rescuing, conservation, and education of domesticated parrots.

My name is Justin I am an Avian and animal lover, My true passion is working with animals and it is what my schooling revolved(s) around. I am a behaviorist and work with any parrot no matter what the chances or risks are. I am big on public education So I am involved in a ton of outreach programs and speeches. Now Onto my personal birds for the first post of this blog and I will add the rescues.

This will get the readers acquainted with my guys and with the rescues so they have a base to read when first starting:).

My personal flock:
Lars- My side kick, A Blue Throated Macaw and one of the smartest birds I have ever experienced. He came to me with some pretty rough aggression issues.. He was left in a basement for a long time and then taken to a home that housed him better just misunderstood him.

Toby(g/w) and taylor(b/g)- The siblings as we call them, It is a Blue and Gold and a Greenwinged Macaw that grew up side by side. These two are animated and insane! They are loads of fun and a centerpiece to my outreach team. These two were rescued after being stuck in a home with little attention and care.

Cooper- My Severe Macaw, he is my next sidekick he does so many cool tricks and is just a great bird that has had a decent past. Cooper in the past experienced some behavioral issues that were solved, cooper was a friend of mines bird that was passed down to me when the time came.

Babe- My Double Yellow Headed Amazon that pretty much likes few things in this world... He was owned by an elderly lady who let him have free roam. While babe has come very far he is still a trouble sometimes and I still work on socializing him. Babe I have had for a long time and he is slowly changing his ways.

Rocky- He is my Senegal Parrot, Babe and him get along great surprisingly... Rocky was left in a flight cage with many cockatoos. He received his name because he fought them off. He has been left with many scars on his face/body. Rocky is an amazing bird and he has come so far.

Fiesta- Fiesta is my Catalina Macaw, she has had a really rough past. In her previous home she was abused. One day She bit someone and they threw her to the ground, drop kicked her and broke her hip in 3-4 places. It was left to heal by itself, Fiesta even after this huge amount of hate that was put upon her.. Has somehow found a way to love, She does well with me only some days having issues coming out of the cage. I am proud of this girl everyday! She has a cage to a custom her bum leg.

pickles- Pickles is My White Bellied Caique, He is full of energy and a normal Caique. He came with some serious aggression issues and we work with them all the time. He has gotten 90% better just once in a great while he gets a wild feather...

jackpot- Jack is our Salmon Crested Cockatoo, He is my most trusted outreach bird. The bird will go on everyone and I have 0 worries. He is also my only bird that does decent with someone with a mental disability. Jack is a great bird although he came with a huge screaming issue that exceeded 8 hours a day. We have since broke him of this horrible habit. Jacks original owner was in a biker gang so jack loves the sound of a motorcycle.

Romeo- Romeo is our Rose- Breasted Cockatoo he is a great little guy. His vocab is amazing and his past hasn't been horrible. He has a tendency to have an attitude and always has. It is very slim that we see it, He does great at outreaches for awhile and is an eye catcher to people looking!

koko- Is our Yellow Collared Macaw, She is a great bird but cannot leave the house. As soon as she does she goes right into a seizure. She has an extreme fear of cars and anything with going anywhere.. In the house she is extremely animated and great!

max and molly- Are male and female Eclectus Parrots. These two are great. Molly has some issues around mating season and thats about it.. besides their need to wander around the bird room.

Billy- Billy is a red bellied parrot that was rescued from a hoarder, She struggles with some phobia problems that we are slowly working on.

Rueben- Our big brut of a greenwing macaw, He is a young boy and is headstrong. We keep our eye on this guy because he likes to get the best of your bad side. We love him dearly and he is a great bird to have around and with outreaches!

OK~!! That is enough about my guys for now, We do have a few spots in our bird room open as of right now that will stay open until a bird with the extreme need for it comes around. I only take in the ones that will sit in the rescue for way to long..
