Hello everyone, you may not have seen me around a lot lately. I have been taking care of someone's diabetic cat and my own animals as well. Some of you may know baby girl my harlequin has been slightly off for about a week. She was started on medicine and it was to no Avail. In the last 24hours she has taken a huge plunge down and is going to the vet tonight. Our vet wasn't in but he made it a priority to come in for us. I believed she had a small yeast infection judging by multiple things so we started her on the advisable things out vet has always suggested and so on. Well I fear the worst, baby has had a horrible past and I really fear fatty liver disease or cancer. I have given her a life she has never had and that is all I can thank myself for, I hope baby pulls out of this.. I will give you guys an update about her after I am back from the vets tonight. The symptoms she was showing were nothing like she was extremely ill just the typical, well I should say I know when a bird has a yeast infection or minor infection and can get it straightened out if it is that pretty easily as my vet has advised us on how to with the multitude of birds we work with. The symptoms were of such and within a few hours she went down a road no one seen coming, from what seemed like better to bad. I am pretty distraught over this as all was well earlier and it just changed for no reason, it's a huge slap in the face and hurts.

I will keep you all posted on what the outcome is and so on. I have made my mind if the prognosis comes back bad or the diagnosis is leaning towards cancer or something that is just going to be terminal I will not have her suffer through it as she is already bad enough.

With love,
Justin.

Justin, I'm quite worried for your dear girl. It makes me very sad to read what you've described is happening to her.. I'm so hoping she'll pull out of it! If there's any chance of recovery, which obviously depends upon what's causing her symptoms, please give her that chance! My thoughts are with the both of you. I'm so sorry.

Well back from the vets with no answers until bloodwork comes in tomorrow. The radiographs were not helpful at all, gram stain was negative. She was given sub q fluids while she was there and if I need I can call and get some for home, my vet was nice enough to tube feed her and give her the meds tonight just because... I have to give meds twice daily of course and hand feed when needed trying to keep her as full as possible. I'm keeping my fingers crossed she pulls through it as well I just fear the worst as I've seen to many birds with symptoms like this end up with having cancer or something terminal and it is a hard thing to face when you already can know the outcomes. Tony I will give her the biggest chance I can depending on the cause of course which is yet to be determined.

The vet believes and sides with me there is a chance it is a infection, but he has reserves at kidney or liver issues. So fatty liver disease cannot be ruled out as her past diet was not so great. Will wait for the bloodwork to come back tomorrow hoping for something that is Alittle more helpful.

Tonight I walked in to check on her and she said hi baby so the fluids helped slightly I believe giving her enough to acknowledged I was there.

Thank you everyone andi will be keeping you all updated as this goes on.

Thank you,
Justin

I thought Harlow had cancer last year too [she was one then]. I learned [from Cornell] that young birds are not the ones to get cancer . What type of medicine are they using [is she responding at all ?] I so sorry [but don't give up shes a young bird]. The liver can heal itself [for somethings] with the right medicine [that was Harlows problem] Kidney [not so good] What is she doing? Please go with YOUR gut feeling on this :( Take care Justin and Baby girl

Justin- did your vet put her on a broad-spectrum antibiotic in hopes of killing any possible infection? Or is he going to wait for the bloodwork results then try and target the specific strain of infection (if in fact it turns out to be an infection)? Does she seem to have more energy after resting?

It's great that she's greeting you. I'm really hoping for her recovery. I wish the best for her so much!

Pinky the issue is baby isn't that young she is suppose t be 17-19 and that is the key age when kidney and liver issues will arise more and cancers and such, that's the worryments. The medicine is baytril.

Tony it is a broad spectrum medicine and is honestly one of the best in my mind it usually fixes anything it can fix. She seems to have perked up slightly this morning, she went to her food dish and ate Alittle on her own so that is a positive thing. As of last night we really couldn't have waited for a specific medication as she needed something then and there kinda ordeal. She seems to be making a slight turn for better, will defiantly keep you all updated as the days go on and bloodwork comes back.

Thank you everyone for your support and very nice comments!.

Hi Justin. I'm happy to hear that Baby is showing some signs of improvement today!

Out of curiosity, what color are the urates and the liquid urine elements of her droppings? And are her droppings very watery?

It's quite good that you got her in for assessment right away. We'll all be hoping for the best possible conclusion from her bloodwork report. Please try and keep her stress level down (I'm sure you have been). It could certainly still be an infection, so maybe the Baytril will do the trick.

I'll be anxiously awaiting your updates! She's on my mind!!

Thank you everyone for your support.

Tony her droppings are yes watery, but she had sub q fluids last night so it is to be expected the poop is Alittle bitof a worryment as it is off I caught that pretty early on and everything to me is leaning towards infection, but there is that chance of cancer as well. The gram stain my dr did didn't show any yeast so no yeast infection. Baby has never been an easily stressed bird and honestly through this time she still isn't she is just chilling out on her perch sleeping pretty often, but in a way I want that as rest is needs for her right now so the medicine can do its job.

General update she is being about the same in response, she is still greeting me like normal and seems to be more balancd, last night she was very unsteady. I gotta go hand feed her another syringe soon so she will probably perk up when she gets a mouth full of that..:)

I just came upon your news Justin. I do hope Baby Girl will turn around and surprise you with better health. I think it gives her strength enough to acknowledge you and that is a huge plus for her to get stronger. I hope she fights for you so that she can get stronger and beat what ever infection has plagued her. Mihijo had fatty liver disease and I was able to turn the values back to normal within a year. On his necropsy his great vessels were clear which surprised both his doctor and I because we were sure he presented with fatty arteries too (can't spell the medical term for this). His liver presented normal during the necropsy also. It ended up being a heart attack that took him at almost 18 years old.

I hope Mihijo's story can give you some measure of comfort. I pray for Baby Girl to get better and stronger so she can heal and continue to live well in your loving care.

Well I got bloodwork results back and they showed nothing at all.... The radiologist took a look at the views and seen nothing abnormal. This doesn't mean she doesn't have an infection or cancer, but it does cut out the kidney or liver issues. So for now she is gonna run on the meds and see what happens. She has been acting Alittle better but sleeping a lot as well, which kinda keeps me on edge because I understand some sleeping but this seems slightly excessive, I think I could be over thinking it to.

Her droppings are looking better though, very slightly but better:)

Thank you everyone for your support through out this I defiantly needed it...

Its very frustrating and scary to not know what is wrong, I had a bulldog that was sick, we ended up going to 4 different specialists, several hospital stays and 5 grand later with no rhyme or reason, he did however recover fully. Its terrible because it is easy to think the worst, just remember to pray for the best.

Hi Justin,

I am glad the bloodwork came back fine and you at least ruled out liver or kidney issues. I still have my fingers corssed that this is an infection and she will get better. :th_hug8:

Keep your chin up & keep us posted.

Hey Justin... while she's still showing signs of illness, at least now you have confirmation of certain things that it's not. Ruling out various diagnoses narrows the field, which can be a good thing. I'm pleased to know that her symptoms are not worsening! Please keep letting us know how she's doing.

Tony you are very correct it is just Lack of better words annoying because if the bloodwork comes back with a infection or something like that we can get meds to target that, but what we have her in I working.

Update, she is gradually getting better seeing her eat more and vocalize more. I am hand feeding her often and she loves that, to much;). Her balance is better and her droppings are improving so lets hope this is getting knocked out of her system!

She is now kinda fighting me giving her meds which is a good thing IMO, the meds taste horrible and no one should not fight Alittle taking them. She doesn't get aggresive or anything just pulls her head away like eww. So she is getting the strength back which is great! Last night I went to hand feed her and she spit it out, I got kinda concerned till I felt her crop which I shoulda done first, but just assumed she needed food. Her crop was full from eating on her own. She is doing great right now and I believe recovery is in the near future.
