Chipper was my first bird. I bought him when I turned 18 because all my life my dad wouldn't let me have a pet. So I figured I was 18, and he would be a "caged" pet so my dad couldn't do anything about it. Well Chipper and I hit if off immediately. The very first night at our house he was on my shoulder and comfortable with me. From that point on we were inseperable. Chipper and I made it through some really hard times. When I was 18 I was in out of the hospital for like 3 months with and "unknown, non-contagious" illness....(to this day we still don't know what it was). When I was 19 my parents split up and Chipper and I were homeless for 3 weeks. After the first few nights I was able to find a place for him to stay with a teacher I had in high school so he wouldn't have to be bouncing around with me. I visited him almost every other day cause I was afraid he would think I had abandoned him. Eventually I was able to get on my feet and he came back with me. He was my guard bird in my very first apartment. We made it through some really tough times. Chipper lived up to his name. He was always happy and I swear he could smile :)

Blitzen was my "Christmas bird." After Chipper passed I waited 6 months to get another bird. I swore no bird could replace Chipper. Well my mom and little brother finally convinced me to get another bird. It was Christmas Eve day when Blitzen came to join my home. Blitzen was very sweet little bird. He was very silly and loving. Unfortunately, one day when he was at my mom's a friend of my little brothers brought her dog and they were playing and the dog climbed up a chair and all they found was feathers :(

JoJo

JoJo was a bird I rescued and then had to rehome. I was excited to get JoJo, but I didn't know when I adopted JoJo that he was illegal in my state. I found out when I took him to the vet. I did my research and it would have been an animal related felony. I was in college and my dream was to work with animals...so I freaked! I know the chances of getting caught were slim, but I didn't want to ruin my chance at a future career. So I did my research and placed him with a sanctuary in Indiana (a state where they ARE legal!). Me and the owner have become great friends because of this and JoJo enjoyed the rest of his life. He had always been around other birds except when living with me so being around other birds brightened his spirits and she got him talking again! So I know in my heart it was the best option for him!

What kind of bird was JoJo? Your parakeets were adorable. Thank you for sharing your stories of your lost little guys. Pets really do help us get through tough times, don't they. Can't wait to see your current birdie buddies!

I am guessing Jojo was a Quaker or monk parakeet in which case it is not a felony but they would come and euthanize him... :(

I always think when I have a bird pass that they are out flying high were they truly belong and it brings a sort of rest to me knowing they have been reborn and are happy and remembering what I have done for them over the years.

Thank you for sharing your heartfelt and loving stories.

Hi Tiffany, Chipper & Blitzen were beautiful!!:th_heart: Blitzen looks like the first parakeet I owned. My boy was named Cherokee & he was the first bird I even owned also when I was first married way back in 1980.

I so understand how you feel about them & how you still miss them. I still miss Cherokee, he was totally bonded to me & I only had him for 4 yrs. Even tho I have large birds now, I still keep my first parrot loves. I have 10 budgies.:th_biggrin:

Thank you so much for letting us share in your memories of your little feathered darlings. I know they are flying high over the rainbow bridge watching over you & Mango.:th_hug8:
