This is LILO. I know I had posted earlier about getting on a waiting list, but I ended up getting her. It's a long story, but to make it short, we met the owner at a bird show we had gone to. We had talked to him about her to find out the breeder he had gotten her from. It turns out that he got her from a guy that had raised her from an egg and couldn't keep her anymore. Moving or something like that. Anyway, he got her and kept her in his dorm at school. They had a fire drill and he got busted with her. His mom knew about her, but his dad didn't. So at the show he was telling us this story and that he might have to give her up. We gave him our info and said if you decide to give her up call us.

About 3 weeks go by, I put a deposit down on an egg. I get an email from him 2 days after I send the deposit in. He said he has tried to get the apartment he is moving to to allow her, but they would not, so he has to rehome her.

So today I went and picked her up. She/he is 13 months old and is just as sweet as can be. My wife fell in love with her the first time we saw her at the show.714713

So everyone meet LILO

LILO is a beauty!! Definitely a lucky find & you will give her such a better life than she had. I'm curious how the guy who kept her in the dorm kept her quiet enough that no one wondered what the loud screaming was? Surely she was not quiet being cooped up in there all the time. Oh well, glad she has been 'set free'! She looks very happy on her play perch.:th_biggrin:

She is actually very quiet. I haven't heard any loud screams yet. I know it's coming, but I really expected it the first night here in a new environment. But she has been very quiet.

Gburchett: LILO is magnificent! You received a refund for the egg deposit and it seems everything has worked out quite well for both LILO and yourself :). Now you're in for a lifetime of joy with your fine girl :D

By the way, please always be sure there's a safe distance between LILO and your dog. It's best to be safe because birds are so fragile. A large dog becoming startled can impulsively and instantly kill a bird :(. It's a very serious issue!

Thanks so much for posting about LILO :)

She is beautiful. I did not want to criticize, but I thought the same thing as tony...your dog looked a little too close for comfort. When Josie is out, ripley is not allowed in the same room. It makes me too nervous. I know we all know how our animals temperaments are but none of is really know what they are capable of if startled. In any case, LILO is beautiful and the dog is adorable. So glad things worked out for you. Wait until she learns the dog's name....that is a treat! Josie will get ripley going...'rippy! Lets go out! Rippy come on!' Enjoy your new addition. :-)

When my dog was alive Quincy was always shouting out commands to her. She didn't listen to him though!

Plax and Blancaej, thanks for the concern about Buddy and LILO. I think the camera angle makes them look closer to each other than they really were. Believe me, I am very much aware of the where abuts of my dogs and LILO. The last thing I want is something to happen to her or Buddy for that matter. If I leave the room and LILO is out and the dogs are in she goes with me. I don't let her alone without the dogs either with me or outside.

I hope this alleviates any fears you all might have had.

Things are going great. She seems to have really adjusted to her new home. She is so sweet. I am working on making a T perch for her so I can start training her to do some tricks. She is already starting to talk. She says "hello" and i think she is saying her name and in think she is saying "what" as well.

That's good to hear. The thing that a lot of people tend to overlook is that birds can easily become startled and leave one's arm (or their perch) and end up hurling themselves toward a nearby dog. When that happens the dog may in turn become startled by the rapid approach or sudden appearance of the bird in its face and instinctively snap at the bird, thus injuring or killing it. We all like to think that our presence in such situations will allow us to intervene effectively if necessary. But events like this can occur so quickly that a timely reaction is often impossible. And that's especially true when we're not positioned between the bird and the dog when the bird heads toward the dog. Sadly, I'm aware of many such instances where pet birds have been maimed or killed by dogs when their owners were very near them :(.

Sorry.. I'm not meaning to lecture you, or anyone... I just feel very strongly about this.

It's great that LILO is settling in :)

I understand. I don't feel like you are lecturing to me. I appreciate your concern.
