I sent my deposit in for my B&G today!! The breeder said he thinks he has eggs, as the mother isn't coming out of the nesting box. Now I just have to wait.

Thanks, yes, I know. Once born I've got at least 4 months. But the breeder is near me, so I can go up and see and play with the baby when he says its ok.

I'm excited, but now I've got to decide on the cage. At least I have a few months to get the cage and toys.

Yes, JT, I have the macaw fever. Actually I've had it for a long time. I wanted a BG when we first got our Moluccan. Unfortunately, we no longer have her, had to re-home her when I went to grad school. But I know she went to a good home. Now I'm ready and done my research.

I'm really excited. I'll post pictures as soon as I get them. I can't wait to start training him/her.

Thought about getting it sexed, but I don't know that it will really matter. Any ideas? Is it worth knowing, one better than the other. I have always have female dogs, but now we have 2 males and 2 females and I couldn't tell you that one was better than the other.

There can be good reasons to get a bird sexed. For example, Merlin' hormones can make her ABV symptoms worse. So by knowing she was a female we were able to give her a Lupron shot right away and not wait on the DNA test. Of course egg laying/egg binding and the need for extra calcium for females. Even things like ovarian or testicular cancer. So while you don't necessarily need to know gender with a baby, down the road it can be a good idea.

I just like to know as well, lol! I say good boy or good girl accordingly :)

I suppose Merlin would have a girls name if her previous owners had known sooner that she was a girl :th_loltears:

Anyhoo, congrats on the new baby and I know you must be so excited!

Congrats! I think having them sexed is helpful and if you get blood work done anyway, it can be done all in one shot! Can't wait to see pics!

Our girl was blood sexed and microchipped at the same time. When she was about 3months, she was toe pricked for the blood rather than being put under and manualy sexed.

If there is a clutch of little ones let them choose you, there will be one or more that will want to know you, its what we did, best thing ever.

Oh a BIG congrats on your impending parronthood!!:th_hug8: This will be the most exciting time for you~~Until the day the breeder tells you~~it's Time!!!:th_yah:

As far as male verses female in macaws, I don't know for sure either which is the best. I have 2 Catalina boys & I just got my Green Wing girl in 3 weeks ago. I haven't had her around long enough to be able to tell a difference in personality, sex -wise. I have read some people don't like female birds due to the egg laying/nesting tendencies they can go into even if they are not with a male. That's about all I know about the preference of one over the other so far.

I dont see a huge difference in male or female birds honestly, and having quite the varity im not sure i favor one sex over the others. i believe the male or female bird questions lay more with cockatoos. People tend to say male cockatoos are more trouble and smartier and that female cockatoos are much more loving and laid back. I cant say i really believe ether side of it i feel it is on a bird to bird basis and that is always how i approach it. Each of these guys are individuals and as individuals they all have pros and cons so one blue and gold will be completely different from another and that is ok! sex, age, past expirences aside they are all unique.

and congrats i cant wait to see the blue and gold!
