Nail trimming help?

My Quaker's nails are overgrown. I live in Croatia and the nearest avian vet is a six hour drive away from me. I have a vet near where I live but from what I heard from other pet owners they are not the best to say it nicely. Does any one have any tips on how to trim his nails?

You can use a file or sandpaper and scrape your birds nails with it a little each day until the nails are shorter. If you place different sized branches as perches in the cage, that will help to wear down the nails.
