Paint Safety ?

So I make a lot of bird toys and I was wondering how to go about painting or dying the wooden parts ? Food color didnt seem to work, any other ideas ? [Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

Great pic! I use to dye cheesecloth and used vegetable dyes. They were powdered and really rich in colour.
