My military macaw, Maynard, passed away today just prior to 2 PM PDT. He was with me for 37 years. He was a wild caught bird and during our time together he incurred his share of problems. My poor green friend should have never been removed from his natural habitat. Maynard suffered a debilitating stroke in 2011 and developed a seizure disorder toward the end of 2016. His life from that point forward must have seemed like hell from his standpoint. Near the final weeks of his life his uncontrollable movements became horrifically severe, dominating every moment. He passed away peacefully this afternoon.

Bless him, an end to all the suffering. You and the rest of your flock must miss him horribly.
There must be wonderful memories in the pictures with his bigger buddy sheltering him under his wing.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I know how much you love and are devoted to your flock. I am sure Maynard had the best life possible with you, given his circumstances. Maynard is finally free to fly again.

Thank you, Jean-Pierre and Helena. Despite that for 6 months or so I've known he would soon pass, actually losing him has been incredibly hard for me. It's a huge void in my life that I'll never be able to fill. Sure, I have my other birds... but Maynard was so unique and special (a reality with every feathered companion, in fact) and is thus irreplaceable! I'm just getting to disassembling his cage and hospital crate today. It's an indescribably painful thing for me to do. His personality and unique vocalizations keep running through my mind. It's not going to be easy living without him :'(

I brought home Maynard's cremated remains today. He seldom molted his larger feathers... but since he was with me for so long I still possess several of them. The small red feathers in the zip-lock bag were molted from his cere area through the years. His favorite foods were sliced apples, leafy greens, and raw cashews. I miss him terribly :'(

Your tribute brought tears to my eyes. Our animal friends/family take a piece of our heart as much as our human friends/family do.

Oh Tony,
I too am very sorry for your loss. No one can feel the deep pain your enduring but we surely know that pain. He was such a beautiful boy and having spent a wonderful 37 years with him was a blessing for you both. Remember the joy, laughter and fun times you shared as I pray they lighten your heavy heart.
His suffering is over and he is free.

Thanks Alice. Your advice seems good. But I'm finding that thinking about him enjoying life during better times generates its own brand of pain, just like thinking about his horrible suffering later in life. It's so very different here without him and everything reminds me of him :'(
I'm sorry my friend, I know it will be a very long time before there is any comfort for your pain. The love and bond you shared is special and unique to the two of you alone.

Remembering Maynard (my wild-caught Military Macaw and cherished friend).
He passed away on March 29, 2019
He came into my life long ago but my memories of our time together are still vivid. I remember first meeting him, as he incessantly screamed at me when I approached the glass-fronted display structure housing him at a local feed store. He had no quarantine band... but Jack needed a friend and I knew Maynard would be the perfect fit. Maynard would remain with us as a cherished flockmate and family member for decades to come.
I miss you, Mayns!
