Yesterday hubby and I were outside doing a bit of fall cleaning. He called me over to take a look at this.

This is just to give you an idea of the size, hard to see here.

Holy crap! :th_eek:Did you remove it?

We had a bee or wasp nest, don't know for sure, in a hole in the ground. I covered the hole with dirt, but they started burrowing their way out. We had to spray them. There seems to all kinds of bees and wasps out this year.

Wow! Which species are they? I can see it's one of the paper-creating ones. Perhaps a species of hornet?

Unfortunately Helena it is about 40 feet up in the tree. I have been calling around to see if someone can come in, but they don't have ladders that high, and I can't get a lift into the backyard because of the flagstone retaining wall. They said to wait until winter when they are dormant and use a power washer to knock it down.

Which species are they?Tony I am not sure. It's hard to see that high (even with my glasses). I keep trying to see if I can catch them going in with my camera zoom, but nothing yet.

We had one in our Yew tree, removed by local bee keeper

We had a small wasps nest behind our garage door which I removed at night when the wasps were all inside asleep and threw over the hedge into the field. Please note, do not throw wasp or bees nests into your neighbour's garden as this is likely to lead to a game of wasps nest tennis. A farmer's field is usually safe.
I then rubbed garlic all around the door frame because wasps, like vampires, do not like garlic and will not return.

Wow, that is amazing. From the look of that hive I think ours may be wasps.

I don't think I will be throwing and wasp or bees nests anywhere. I am terrified of both.:th_scared3:

We have what we call "meat bees", a sort of wasp, that come in late summer. Nasty creatures that keep my outside animals from enjoying their outdoor foods. They will hover around any food left in the open and their sting is debilitating. Their bites are just that..bites! They actually will take a chunk out of you, nasty creatures..I hate them. Strong word, I know,, but I really do.

We seem to be attracting the funniest creatures this year. This was on my window ledge yesterday. The dowel is 1/4"

We've just returned from staying with friends in France. They have to suffer frelons which are hornets that reach a size of over an inch long and have a rather nasty sting.

I think we have something similar here. Wasps and hornets bother me, bees not so much. I like to garden and am used to bees buzzing around. I have been stung by a wasp...youch...worse than a bee sting.

Indeed, I am quite happy to have a bumble bee sitting on the end of my thumb but wouldn't be so brave with a wasp.

I have been stung by a wasp as well.

Sitting on the handrail where I couldn't see it and sure enough I grabbed the rail.

They are nasty!

We had a wasp nest above our front doorway but I didn't notice as we don't use the front to often. As I went out to do whatever (I don't recall) I got stung all about my head. It made me quite dizzy, but when the evening came we also removed it after spraying it down with a commercial wasp spray.

Wow, Alice. That would have been scary. Were you doing anything to provoke (obviously, without realizing).

Nope, just getting the mail. It was quite a surprise to me! I suppose I was just to close to where they made their nest.
