Hello there fellow parrot lovers! I finally decided that it was time for me to adopt a bird after wanting one for so long. The timing seemed right, so I went to my shelter and adopted the cutest Green Cheek Conure named Komali. He's only 6-7 months old and is VERY shy. Hands freak him out so much! Poor guy. I don't want to invade his space, but at the same time, I'd really like to become good buddies with him. I've read that GCCs are very friendly once tamed. So... I was wondering if any of you would help me out here.
How should I go about taming him?
Thanks! :)
Hi royalblue Welcome to PP. Congratulations on your new forever friend Komali.
I would suggest you give Komali a few days to get familiar with his new surroundings. It takes a bit of time, each bird is different. In the meantime enter the room quietly but not silently. Sit down and read a book out loud or just talk to him for a few minutes, maybe 10 or so. You don't have to be right up at the cage but close enough so he hears you and gets comfortable with your voice. If he will allow you to come close to the cage without being frightened you could put some millet or favorite treat in his bowl so he learns that when your around he gets good things.
I'm sure some of the other members will give you some more suggestions.

Alice has given good advice, when you enter the room announce your arrival because someone crept into the room where Casper was asleep, not wanting to awake him but when they made a noise he was so startled he fell off his perch. Fortunately he did not hurt himself as he fluttered past lower perches on his way down to the floor of the cage.
I know you are longing to be able to stroke and cuddle but you have to work at the birds pace. They will come to you when they are ready. That doesn't mean to say you can't encourage them with tasty treats. It took nine months for Casper to accept me whereas Margaret was his best friend as soon as he came to live with us (age 25).

Welcome to PP
Great advice given. Go at Komali's pace, give him some time and reassurance ( a little bribery with tasty treats never hurt either :th_wink:)
