Your little conure is a sweetie and looks like it is enjoying it's corn.
Will you be getting a different cage for it? I could be mistaken, but the cage it is in looks like it's made of galvanized metal which could lead to heavy metal poisoning. I would hate to see something happen to your new friend.

If you see a cage that you like post it up and we will advise (in a helpful way). You may be able to get a good second hand one :)

Cute little guy :). And yes, as Helena mentioned, that cage is made from galvanized wire mesh - which means its coating contains zinc. It will be best to obtain a safer one for your new buddy.

That cage is a little small unless you plan on having your bird out for most of the day. It's important to give your bird lots of room to move around, play with toys, have different perches, etc. Are you able to get something a little bigger?

One of my conures is in a 24inch wide, 22 inch deep and 36" high cage. He doesn't like a bigger cage and seems to manage in this one. I checked your Amazon site and you do have a very limited selection. Do you have other online stores you can access?

I wouldn't go any less than the what Helena has stated she uses. Once you add the food dishes, toys, possibly a swing, your little one won't have much room to stretch his wings.

I am thinking of making one of these cages as per my requirements would be cheaper than ready-made ones also what should be size of the bars and spacing in between them

The bar spacing should be no more than 3/4 of an inch. As to bar size...they shouldn't have any noticeable flex to them. Although your conure is small, it still has a strong beak which could bend bars and create an opening large enough to get its head stuck.
Another suggestion would be to get two of the cages you have picked out, put them together to make one larger cage.

If you are unsure, it's always best to take Kiwi to the vet. There could be lots of reasons for scratching. Molting and food allergy are two of them. Some birds develop or have allergies to corn and Kiwi seems to love her corn. Try giving Kiwi some different fruits and vegetables to see if there is a change.

A check by the vet is often very helpful, they can give lots of advice, even about things you hadn't even thought were a problem.
Do you have Kiwi registered with a vet already and do they have an avian specialist on the team?
We tend to try and get an appointment with one particular veterinarian whom Casper has a good rapport with as this is less traumatic for him.

what is a feather sheathA feather sheath is the tube-like structure that encases a new feather as it emerges from the skin. They're also called pin feathers. They're initially soft, tender and flexible... but they progressively become harder and fairly brittle. And that's when they're ready to break away from the feather they've been protecting. Since they typically require some assistance to start cracking off, birds use their beaks and claws to help the process along. Take a closer look at your bird and I'm sure you''ll see a few :)

There is nothing like a conure trying to nibble on your ear. My crimson belly conure does that too.

Your bird needs to be able to spread his/her wings open all the way whilst in the cage. He/she also needs enough room to throw his/her head back (birds drink water by scooping it up with their beaks and throwing it back into their throat). These are absolute musts. I'll link some good cages for a green cheek conure down below. :)

This is the exact cage I have for my green cheek Phoebe. I love it. In my opinion this is one of the best cages you could get.

Here's a different kind of cage that would be good for a Green cheek conure.

Congrats on your new baby Kiwi!! Love that name!!

I have the exact cage as Phoebe, and I know of a few Conure owners that do as well. It gives them plenty of room to play and stretch out.

Conures are just adorable! Just know that biting is very normal for them, just let them know when it’s too much or too hard. I just say “Too hard Nibbles” and pull him away from me.

I rescued mine not long ago and his bite was really hard! Took some patience and some time outs and now he’s a lot better. I keep alternating new toys for him quite often so that I don’t become the chew toy! [emoji6]

As Tony mentioned, he’s probably scratching his pin feathers. Does Kiwi like showers or baths? That helps get them softer and alleviates the itching a bit. My Nibbles loves showers, I put him in the sink or shower (I make sure it’s disinfected with a solution of vinegar and water) and let him chose to walk in the stream of water. He loves it!

With time you can also be the one that helps rub those pin feathers out, you just have to be gentle.

Give him ton of love [emoji172][emoji172][emoji172]

As much as I also use vinegar, I don't think it is a disinfectant.

You are totally right!! [emoji33] I just hate using strong cleaners around my birds, what do you use?
