Prior to Nike, I had an Orange Winged Amazon for about 39 Years. I woke one morning in November of 2015 to find her dead at the bottom of her cage. She was never sick a day in her life and was on a seed diet. Most of the pictures I have of her are Polaroids but I did find a couple I took with my first digital camera.

Here she is, Berta. She hated my wife for her entire life and would rather bite her than take a peanut from her. Needless to say when she passed I had a hole in my heart and immediately started looking for a bird to adop. You can guess my wife was none too keen on the idea but when I brought her to meet Nike (preceeded by an argument over getting another bird) she immediately fell in love with her and we took her home right then.

Anyway, here's Berta, I miss her antics and that is the one thing I'm a little disappointed with Nike about, she's so good and never gets into trouble ;)

I can't believe that Berta got into trouble. That second pic shows her looking so innocent.

Heheh, when I first got her and was quite ignorant, I would leave her cage open all day. It would not be unusual to come home from work and find her on the floor.

She was so pretty!

That is hysterical!! I would love to read some stories about her antics!

Sounds to me like maybe you might need another Orange Winged Amazon. Do you think your wife would mind? Berta is quite a lovely looking girl, I can only imagine how devastated you were when you found her.

Lady, While I would love more birds and dogs, at this point im my life things are working well with only 1 dog, 4 cats and Nike. The cats take care of themselves and both Nike and my Rat Terrier Corbin are good travelers and allow us to take them any where that we can drive to. Adding to the menagerie would crimp our current lifestyle. I would really like to get into rescuing senior dogs at some point but that will have to wait until our lifestyle changes. I spend some time every day on Petfinder but realize that adding another animal to the mix would risk Nike's lifestyle and would probably mean that she couldn't be out as much as she needs and I like her to be.

There was a time 15 years ago when getting into bed at night looked like this....and a couple of cats are missing from this pic. ;)

I understand where you are coming from. Having more than what is comfortable and pleasing for our companions as well as our family is extremely important to consider and not be taken lightly. You're absolutely right in that it would be taking away from Nike and her freedom from her cage. I would like to have Lady out and about more at home but I don't dare risk the chance since we also have predator animals living with us. Lady and I spend our time together between two rooms most of the winter. In the summer it is a bit different because we can lock the cats in an air conditioned room and spend the day on our open porch enjoying the warmth and summer breeze.
Sometimes I would like to have a companion for Lady as well, but it doesn't seem to be the ideal situation for us either. Her and I seem quite content with how things are now with our routine and having each other. My hubby also tends to her but not as much as I do. Lady gets very excited when he comes to play with her, she will laugh, dance and chat away in her language as well as some people words.

Kendra, Berta was a typical amazon, very active and always doing something that she shouldn't. My wife did not find her quite so funny the day she destroyed four bookshelves in our library built in.

Nike on the other hand does not play, chew or anything with the exception that occasionally she will attack her bell for a few minutes. I would feel like she was a happier bird if she even attempted to play with some of the toys I bought for her ;)
