I will preface this by saying with the exception of Jef and my grandfather (who has passed since) Rosie is terrified of men. If a man she doesn't know well gets too close she will screech and fly (bumblingly) away.
Sunday while my daughter and husband were at her play I was in my room with Rosie. My son had some football friends over to make a ridiculous rap video for a History project. He kindly asked that I keep the "annoying bird" in my room. This worked fine for me bc I wanted no part of teenage boys while hobbling around with back pain.
While the boys are here Rosie seemed very interested in the laughing and chaos going on in the other room. After a couple hours it got quiet and I figured they went outside. I snuck downstairs to do some laundry, Rosie in tow. As I came back to the upstairs landing I see one of the boys. I quickly say hi and try to get back in my room. The kid says, Uh, is that a parrot on your shoulder?!?! Then he starts laughing and yelling, OMG, Fitz has a HUGE parrot. You have to see this!!
I laughed and went back in my room thinking it would end there. I knew my son was going to be annoyed so I just wanted to remove myself. Next thing I know my son is coming in my room saying the guys want to see Rosie. So I come out and there are boys heading our way. Now mind you, this is a narrowish hallway. I am a short person 5'3 is an exaggeration I use on my license. These are very large football players. My son is at least 5'11 and the others are about the same.
Knowing how Rosie reacts to men I start to panic. I ask the guys to head back to my sons room where the light is better and there is more room. Fortunately no freak out by Rosie and she stays on my shoulder as we head to the room. As soon as we get there one guy says, How do I pet her? No fear, just pure exuberance. Without thinking I quickly reply You don't. The kid looks crestfallen. I look over at Rosie who is completely engaged and happy. She says, Hello! The kids are beside themselves. She then goes through her routine of bobbing, Hi, Hello and then Beep Beep! So I tell them they can Beep her beak. Which Rosie does eagerly, Beep Beeping whenever her beak is touched. Connor now looks like he is ready to kill us both so I say I will let them get back to work and retreat.
For the next hour I hear the kids talking about her. So I guess she has a new set of admirers and maybe got over her fear. If only just a bit. :)
