View Full Version : Mom Has Been Sedentary & Rosie Is A Happy Girl

The last few weeks at my house have been insanely busy. Which has meant Rosie has been spending a lot of time in my room watching Disney Jr by herself. She hasn't complained and I think she has quietly been practicing her flying. But she still hasn't gotten the attention she is used to.
Last week I started painting our upstairs room by room. While finishing the first room my lower back started complaining. I ignored the pain and went to work on the hallway. The pain spread down my leg. Wanting to get things done, I took Motrin and continued with a bathroom and then the stairs. My leg really started screeching at me but I had to make and decorate about 100 cookies for Ashies play so I took more Motrin and soldiered on. Well by Sunday my body said that is it. I couldn't even sit without my leg seizing up. So I sent Jef to work the concession stand at Ashies show and rested. Didn't matter it continued to worsen. Finally went to the chiropractor yesterday who sent me for X-rays this morning. I am not allowed to continue painting in the foreseeable future which is killing me. Since Sunday I have been reclining on a heating pad with a tens unit.
Rosie is in HEAVEN. She is so happy to have Mommy all to herself all day. She will go to her tree to eat and go potty but otherwise she wants to be with me on my chair or bed. Yesterday I couldn't make it out of the chair to get her so she flew over to me. That never happens. :) So even though I have been super uncomfortable it has been nice to spend some extra one on one time with my girl. She is great company for a pathetic, hobbling lady. Gotta love my crazy red headed girl. :)

Awe Kendra so sorry to hear, I hope you are feeling better and up and around soon. Also, glad to have you back.
Being held down when you are not used to it can drive you crazy, but you need to take care of yourself. The painting can wait. :th_wink:
I am glad you had some time with Rosie. I can only imagine how happy she is to have you all to herself.

I too am sorry to hear about your painful and restrictive physical complications, Kendra. The universe was apparently telling you to take a break for a bit. So follow your doctor's advice, give yourself adequate time to recover, and enjoy your feathered child's contentment for now :D

Thanks guys! I am bored out of my mind. Before I went to the chiropractor I would paint a little or prep something every time my back stopped seizing for a while. But I have been a good girl since yesterday and am taking it easier. I binge watched Sneaky Pete and now Schitts Creek on Amazon Prime Video. I read a bit in between but I am itching to do something. Lol.
Funny, after I posted this I got up to fold clothes and Rosie had a tantrum. Screaming nonstop. Mind you I was literally 3 feet from her. I guess she got a little too spoiled. She is now in time out in my room. Which isn't really time out since she prefers to be in my room. :)

Sorry to hear about your aches and pains Kendra. Rosie is probably ecstatic that you are down and out.
Too bad you couldn't train her to get your lunch or something....lol.

Oh geez, back pain sucks! When your back hurts you really have to take care of it or it will stop you from doing just about everything. I hope your doctor gave you more information on why your back is out of whack. To be able to prevent such discomfort in the future would be ideal. Did you pull something while painting, or just over doing it in general. None of us are as young as we use to be, so be extra careful and yes, follow the doctors recommendations.
It must of put a big smile on your face when Rosie flew over to you. Maybe you should hold out when your better and see if she will do it again :).

So true! I am still 16 in my head and I forget to act my age. Dr thinks it was the reaching up while painting. Possible something like a ruptured disc or something I can't remember. I guess I will see what she says once she sees the X-rays. She said I may need an MRI if nothing shows. I don't care what I need to do at this point. I just would like the sciatic nerve pain to stop.
I am fortunate that my husband works from home. He has been really good and has taken over everything for me. Still, the sooner life is back to normal the better!! :)
I was so excited when she flew. Jef heard me cheering and clapping and came down to see what was going on. lol. I may take your advice and hold out more often!

Oh, owwie! I'm sorry you are in pain, sciatica is one of the most debilitating :(. I remember Amigo flying to me when I was at my worst, either emotionally or physically. He always knew there was something wrong and he was always most comforting at those times. When I was on top of the world..he was always even more so! Gotta love these birds! :th_heart:

Went to chiro today and the X-rays show not too much. She thinks it's a disc based on the lower spine. If it doesn't improve then I guess an MRI and another doctor on the menu.
I stopped by my primary Dr yesterday after my X-ray since he is a couple doors down. I let the desk know the chiro recommended prescriptions from my primary. Hadn't heard back but this afternoon they were filled. So I am hoping they will help a bit.
Rosie is relaxing on the pillows behind me. Her new spot on my bed since the back thing started. She has been very patient today as I had an appt and the floor guy came by so she was upstairs. She waited quietly until I managed to make my way upstairs to her. My sweet little crazy girl.

Back pain is so nasty, and the chiro can be painful as well but it does help in the long term. Hopefully your chiropractor will give you a printed sheet with suitable stretching exercises to do at home once you have recovered. Not doing them because you feel OK and are busy is not a good idea. Ask me how I know :)

Yes, she really hasn't been able to do much adjusting since everything is so inflamed. Hopefully tomorrow. Although I took the medication, felt better and stupidly started moving my dresser and scraped the old paint for about 45 minutes. I am feeling it now so I may not be adjusted tomorrow either. She gave me one simple stretch for now. Today was the first day I could do it.
Ok, I'll bite, how do you know?

I think you are right. I really just need to give it time to heal.
The problem is I hate doing nothing. So I keep sneaking things and then my back yells. Jef actually came in and asked "what the hell are you thinking, you crazy person?!?" This was bc I snuck and moved the dresser, then crouched behind it and was scraping the wall this afternoon. After he went out during his workday for my medication. Hmmm...I wonder why he was exasperated?!?
Since my calf and foot are now numb and tingling despite the meds I will listen and stop. I am stressing though bc we have new floor being installed upstairs Tuesday. (The dogs have completely destroyed the carpet). The plan was to paint everything beforehand. I am the painter and spackle person in the family. Jef will do the ceilings but that is about it. I have 3 rooms left to paint, my bedroom being the most annoying. (The people before us painted over wallpaper glue that was not completely removed. The paint is crackled and coming off in quite a few areas. I tried to fix it years ago but apparently not well enough. Thus, lots of scraping and spackling.) It is killing me that the painting will probably not get done before the floors.

Makes sense. Our handyman is installing and he is working us in between jobs. We have the flooring in boxes in our living room and Jef just wants it done already. So I will just have to deal with not getting the painting done first.

I do hope you are feeling better soon, nice to see Rosie is behaving for you.
The house will get done. We've been renovating for almost 15 years, as soon as one thing is finished we find something else to do. I guess it will end sometime, unless we start over again. :th_eek:

Thanks! Rosie decided to go to bed early tonight. I thinks it's bc we are downstairs instead of in my room. Jef painted our ceiling so Rosie and I were down here. When we don't go with our usual routine I think it throws her off.
I know what you mean about renovating. A realtor once told me if you do a project a year, your house should stay current. That has always stuck with me. So that is what we try to do. Always with resale in mind. It just never ends I guess. Lol.
Although once the kids are done with school my plan is to sell the house and get two small condos. One near my son and one near my daughter. I have a strong feeling they will not end up in the same area. :)
Hopefully condos won't be as much upkeep as the house.
What are you working on currently?

Ah, you feel you have not suffered enough bringing up your own kids and have the need to be looking after grandchildren :)
I did make a start on redecorating the top floor bathroom last year but haven't got past fitting a new extractor fan and filling a few faults in the plaster. I thought I would start with a small room and hoped I would gain some momentum. Ho-hum.
kendrafitz
01-22-2017, 02:09 PM
You got it Jean-Pierre. ;) Poor Jef is going to be dragged to whatever ends of the earth the kids go to.
I find it is really hard to get the momentum started. Bathrooms are a big pain in the tush. I did our powder room a few years ago. Ripped everything out, replaced and painted (I was raised by a general contractor). Jef did crown molding for me. It is time consuming and a lot of small annoying things to do. Just painting rooms is so much faster & easier. Not hard to get momentum bc you see results right away. When I painted the kids bathroom I noticed it needs flooring (the tiling is missing grout in lots of places) and then I guess new toilet and vanity. Not looking forward to doing that at all.
Sometimes I think the more you do the more you have to do. As soon as one area is done, the next area looks dull and in need of a make over or pick me up. Time and money often take a bit longer to acquire.

That is a big job. Both the cabinets and windows. We had our cabinets painted to try to save. We also need windows. I would have preferred that over the floor but I guess there is always next year. :)

We also painted the cabinets, amazing what a router and coat of paint can do.
I think the windows should be the next item, maybe do a couple every year. My livingroom window is a picture window, it is 6' x 9'. It is the main one that needs done as it is the original from 1975. The basement windows are also original, they are the old wooden ones. The rest were done in 1988, so they are okay for the time being. Not looking forward to replacing the big one though.

It's crazy what a little paint can do, isn't it? Brought the kitchen from the 80s to the present. We had them done to look shabby so they hopefully wear better. :)
That is a big window. Will you do them yourself or have someone do it? Our windows are original, mid 80s. They must be cheap though. You can feel a breeze from all of them. It makes me crazy. I had the sliding door to the back replaced a few years ago bc it was horrible. It never occurred to me to do a few windows at a time. That makes it much more affordable. Thank you for the idea!!

Well, the guys are here to start the floors today. Got everything done but my bathroom, my room and some trim in Jef's office. Rosie and I are hanging in the mess that I am calling my room bc she is terrified of the guys. Since they will be in and out I figure this will be less stressful for her. I guess I'll find out once the banging starts. I started painting my room yesterday bc I couldn't help myself. Two of the walls still need to be scraped and patched. The scraping is tough so I asked Jef to help but now his back is bugging him. Sigh. I am dying to finish this before they get to flooring my room. I may try to scrape and patch today depending on my back/leg. Then sand/paint once the guys leave and I can deposit Rosie to her bedroom. As a side note I want to say I am meticulously vacuuming dust and windows open plus using Behr Matinee paint which is supposed to be almost as good VOC wise as Benjamin Williams Aura.
Here we are stuck in a messy room.

Wishing you good luck with your room, Kendra. Will you be able to take a breather once the flooring is down?
My husband is a retired carpenter, so we can save some money as we can do a lot of the work ourselves. However, I do hate the mess while we work.

I'm sure it's nice to get your renovation work done, Kendra. But do you know the actual VOC release levels of the paint you have chosen and the limit that's safe for a bird like Rosie? It appears that she is not only within the same room where you painted yesterday, but as well very near the painted wall(s). Having open windows indeed helps. However, once applied, some paints release potentially harmful toxins for a considerable period as they continue to cure. In addition to the toxic solvent levels in the paint, the size of the room, the proximity of the application site to the bird, the duration of time the bird spends near the application site, and the health and size of the bird are all factors. At a minimum I would say it's still a risk to have Rosie remain in the area where you've recently applied the paint :(

I will say that I am paranoid about VOC's. When we had the plumber in to check the waste lines, he had to repair a section and I was questioning him as to whether there would be any VOC's in anything he used. I am sure he thought I was nuts.
kendrafitz
01-24-2017, 07:03 PM
Point taken. The windows were open and the paint had been dried for about 16 hours. (I stopped midwall when my back/leg started acting up yesterday). I usually use Aura which has 0 VOCs but I just didn't have time to get to the BW store. I figured this was about the same. But you are correct low and 0 are different.
Better safe than sorry, so thank you for the reminder. We are now downstairs in the family room. In a little while I will put her in her cage for a nap and finish up upstairs.
Helena - When I had the guys paint my downstairs a while back they gave me a hard time bc I spent so much on Aura. But since I was worried about Rosie I didn't care. They looked at me like I was nuts for spending extra bc of my pets. Oh well. They actually brought it up the other day when they came to talk about the floors. :) They definitely think I am nuts!!

You know, I'm not really sure on that. My answer would be of course for me. But a lot of people don't believe that things like that can be harmful. So I just don't know.
I'm not upset about them giving me a hard time for spending more to keep everyone healthy. They weren't mean, just incredulous. Some people just don't get it. I just laugh it off and move on. As long as my family and I are happy and we are all healthy, it's all good. Although I'm always open to advice, I have reached an age where I just don't care what anyone else thinks.

Especially when they marginalize the safety of loved ones... be they human, avian, or some other species.
My view on the attitude of "the guys" and those who share it can be summarized with the following question: What justifies someone's incredulousness over the avian health precautions a parrot's caregiver has taken, when not only is that 'someone' not a qualified avian health expert, but as well has limited knowledge in general of the things that are unsafe for companion parrots?

I know. It's unfortunate and does happen too often.
But I think of it this way, they just don't know any better. Most of us on the forum are here for a reason. To learn and share about our parrots. We have taken time to research how to best take care of our loved ones and actively look for help and support from others. People who haven't researched these creatures just don't know how delicate they are. And even people who have researched make mistakes. Like me today. But unless someone is being mean, I just go with the thought that they don't know about it. Lord knows I knew NOTHING before Rosie came into our lives. So to me, incredulous is just not understanding, which is fine with me. We can use it as a chance to educate or not, depending on the situation. If they were mean, it would be a different story.

As such, I'm relying solely upon your description of them giving you a hard time about your safe-paint precautions. I have, however, encountered many people who respond to pet bird care essentials in a similar manner. In most cases I view those responses as condescendingly ignorant rationalizations for a double standard that they prefer to support. Folks don't have to be overtly mean in their delivery of opinion to be hurtful to me.

From my experience, people that haven't owned or been around birds really have a difficult time understanding why they are different from cats, dogs, etc. I explain over and over to my husband the dangers of opening doors, VOC's, out of cage times etc and he still does not understand that their intelligence and needs put them in a different "category". I have finally taken to locking him out of the bird rooms when the birds are out.
I even had a plumber complain to another plumber that he didn't like that he had to close every door behind him when he entered or left a room. I had explained the issue with the cats having access to the birds. Some people just don't understand and because they don't we just have to be ever more vigilant. In some ways I feel sorry for them because they don't have the opportunity to have that special relationship with a parrot.

I am happy to say that my back, while still tender, is vastly improved. Which means I am just about done painting our room.
Rosies night time routine has been changed while the painting was happening. She is normally in our room until 8 or 9 and then goes to bed. Since that isn't an option she has been cranky in the evenings. She doesn't want to be on her tree or on the recliner with me. So she ends up just wanting to go to bed early.
In a day or two we can go back to our normal routine. Which I believe will make my girl even happier than me being sedentary. Funny how routine, something we don't even give much thought to here, is so
Important.

Absolutely agree with how important routine becomes for the birds. It's the safety and security it provides them. The problem for me is, I feel guilty just going to get groceries if it interferes with their schedule. So my schedule/routine is a reflection of theirs. Funny how we adapt to their needs.

To the sort of people who think that using expensive paint because of your bird is ridiculous, just explain that the cost of replacing the bird is far greater than spending a bit extra on paint. As their brains are hardwired to dollars and cents they will see the logic in this.

Those people would probably think we were crazy to spend that much money on a bird.

They're not wrong :)Sure they are... we're the sane ones since we get to enjoy the enrichments of birdie love in our lives. They're the ones missing out because of their insensitivity and their erroneous preconceptions ;)

Well, the floors are FINALLY done! So Rosie and I can get back to our routine. It is such a sweet sound to hear her grinding her beak in my room once it gets dark. :)
Life is again GOOD!!
Here are a couple pics of Rosie's room (really Jef and my room). I managed to paint the entire upstairs, bad back and all. It looks so clean and new that I am contemplating painting part of the first floor. Jef made me promise to hold off a bit in that though :)

The room looks great! You did a terrific job. Rosy looks very regal on her perch.

Thanks! I think Rosie was annoyed that I turned the light near her on. She was starting her evening sleepy grinding when I took the pic. :)

Thanks! It was an off the cuff color pic, but I like it.
