When your parrot is doing something (or heading somewhere) that he/she should not, and you thus express an emphatic verbal command of deterrent, such as the word "no", does he/she listen to you and respond appropriately and right away?

Good question. Most of mine respond to a firm no, followed by the "stink eye".:watching:

Do yours respond to a "no"?

One or two of mine seem to respond. Yoshi stops in his tracks and then hits his beak on whatever he is standing on while letting out a little growl. Ramsay just looks at me then continues on, Quagmeyer stops and sits all puffed up.

Do yours respond to a "no"?Salsa almost always responds to a stink eye.. if it happens to be harsh enough, that is. Disturbingly, though, as far as verbal deterrents, all four of mine typically require at least 3 successive NO!'s, each delivered with an increase in intensity :th_shakehead:. Perhaps macaws are just extra stubborn ;)

Nash tends to listen if I say in a really dissapointed voice " Oh my gosh, Nash, No!" He usually straightens up real quick.. I don't know why or how he does this since I have never used negative reinforcement but I'm glad he does! LOL

Rosie hears me and yells NO! at me. She then either runs/waddles over and pinches me or ignores me and continues with her task. Once in a blue moon she will listen, but generally not.

She will respond to the stink eye by coquettishly ducking her head and kissing me about 1/2 the time. The other 1/2 the time she ignores it.

So she'll listen on rare occasion (if she feels like it)... but mostly ignores your verbal instruction and likes to talk back and sometimes even punish you, ay? Gotta love her

A stink eye glare works far better with him as well. Actually, eye contact with an appropriate facial expression is usually the best method to get his attention and simultaneously communicate immediate thoughts to him. Sals promptly responds to certain looks on my face if I happen to be staring his direction. I've even found that if I want him to start talking, I merely need look him in the eye. He'll always pin his eyes in response and then say (or yell) something. He's the only one I have who does this.

Rosie is a character, that is for sure!

That is interesting about Salsa. Eye contact with Rosie is huge as well. Not as much as Salsa, probably bc she doesn't really care if I am annoyed 3/4 of the time.

But with talking around other people she always makes eye contact with me. It's funny. I always think of it as her confirming that the people are ok and not a danger. Once I give her a confirmation she will bob her head to work herself up and then start chatting. :)

I bet that's exactly it. She wants reassurance that the people and the situations are okay. Shy individuals often exchange subtle, private signals with their friends when around strangers. That may be what Rosie is doing.

The only time I feel the need to deter Lady is when she is yelling, so if I try to give her a verbal command she doesn't even seem to hear me. I usually have to get right in her face wearing a big frown and have my hand out like a stop sigh and tell her to stop. Sometimes it does work, other times not so much.

When Yoshi is yelling I move my mouth and make facial expressions as if I am talking to him, or I will barely whisper. He stops, tilts his head and just looks at me. Mind you it doesn't always last.

I don't think I ever say no, it's more of an EHH! It gets their attention and they do listen..for an instant :). Action is then taken to reinforce! They are such intelligent beings..it doesn't take much :)

When you say "No, don't do that" to Casper he goes into a growling rant to which Margaret replies "Don't answer back" :)

I love that Casper complains when he is reprimanded. And I love Margaret's reaction!!

My birds response to a 'no' usually depends of their mood. Sometimes they listen and sometimes they don't.*

Absolutely Stephen, it all depends on their mood
