View Full Version : Rosie Has A New Nemesis

I started crocheting a scarf for a xmas gift yesterday. I put on a pair of dollar store reading glasses that I usually do not wear. I didn't think much of it until Rosie noticed. She went full mohawk, stated making hissing noises and ran at my face full speed. She then proceeded to RIP the glasses off my face and toss them. I put them back on when she was occupied and once she noticed she tried to remove them again. When I stopped her, she pinched my neck several times fairly roughly. Eventually I put her on her tree until she calmed down and then we resumed our routine without the glasses.

I forgot all about it until this afternoon, when I was upstairs with her and put a different pair of reading glasses on. She came running across the bed, hopped on my chest and ripped the offending glasses off my face. Goofy girl.

So my girl has a new nemesis, reading glasses. I don't usually wear them, but I have found they make close work much easier. So I have started wearing them here and there. I hope Rosie gets used to them bc it is really annoying to have them forcibly removed by a kooky macaw. ;)

We ain't getting any younger..that girl better get use to them! Such a funny girl! I wear prescription glasses and I've noticed Shaggy being stand-offish when I approach him with my sunglasses.

Wow, funny how they do not like something that, they believe, is not supposed to be there.

I wear dollar store glasses to read as well. My birds think it's just an extra toy to play with and will hang off them if they can.
Kendra, if I had a big macaw running after me to get my glasses off, I would be tossing them behind me as I retreated very quickly to another room. Good thing Rosie is a sweetheart.

Yes, Rosie at least seems to think anything out of the norm on my head or face is evil and must be removed immediately. I'm sure she thinks she is helping me.

Helena - I think it's all what you are used to. I'm used to being manhandled by her. I am her playstand and am used to getting a good pinch when I am not pleasing her or she is super excited. Rosie has been with us for a bit over 4 years, so I trust her and can generally read her. The Mohawk had me a bit unsettled. The running, however, is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. She waddles/runs, which always makes me giggle. I'm sure that annoyed her as she was trying to rescue her dumb human from the evil glasses. ;)

I would say you are right about it being what you are used to. My husband shudders when he sees Willy on my lap or arm. I know Willy and all his little signals so he doesn't bother me.

I can SO relate, Kendra! You might remember the following accounts I posted regarding Salsa:

Speaking of difficult behaviors and Salsa, yesterday morning he was on top of his cage. I had on a pair of reading glasses and bent over to pick up something from the floor that was near his cage. When I came back up, Salsa lunged forward and grabbed the glasses from my face (by the nose bridge), then violently hurled them onto the floor. He hates this particular pair of glasses and enjoys brutalizing them... plus he thinks doing so is pretty funny. Well, as soon as my glasses hit the floor, I bent over to pick them up and Salsa backed away from where I was standing - because I usually admonish him after he does the glasses hurl and he anticipated that this time would be no different. So I stepped up on a nearby footstool and leaned over the top of the cage so I could be nose to beak with him during my planned admonishment. Well, before I could get a single syllable out, Sals looked me squarely in the eyes and said in his most sarcastic tone, "how are you?" I started laughing like a fool :D. Sals thus escaped the admonishment. I'm sure he will have his way with this pair of glasses again and again in the future (until he ends up breaking them, that is). He clearly uses humor to defuse my responses to his antics ;)

Your theory is interesting that Sals may view my phone as a rival for my attention. I suppose it could be partly that... but I think it's mostly something else. He treats a particular pair of reading glasses that I have exactly the same way. He'll lunge out at them, rip them off of my face, then hurl them onto the floor. I seriously doubt that he considers those glasses to be competing for my attention ;). It may be more that he doesn't like the objects he has trouble understanding. So he may view it as: when you don't like something why not attack and destroy it? :D

I can't help but wonder whether GWs may be more prone to this sort of behavior than other macaw species, since none of my other 3 seem to care whether I'm wearing my reading glasses or not :indecisiveness:

Well I wear glasses always, an if Lady even comes near to them I have to stop her in her tracks. I use to wear contacts most of my day and when I got home I prefer the glasses so she's use to them.

I was thinking of you and Salsa when Rosie was ripping my glasses off. Interesting that none of your other guys are offended, maybe it is a Greenwing thing in the macaw world. Who knows? Goofy redheads.

Lady is a such good girl.

It may be what they are used to. Although my mom almost always wears her glasses and Rosie persists in trying to get them off her face. I never even thought about it until she ripped the reading glasses off me.

I think your right, she's use to seeing me with them on. Humm, I may just have to sit with her without them to see if she has a reaction. It's been a long time since I wore those contacts.

You will have to let me know if Lady notices. :)

Nike acts like Rosie whenever we pick up a cell phone. If you don't put it down quick enough there will be blood....and not hers.

Whenever we are talking on the phone Casper immediately starts repeating "bubye" - trying to get rid of the caller :)

Casper is funny. At least he is polite. ;). Rosie just lets loose with ear shattering screams when I am on the phone.
