I did read about this. I am not sure how repopulation will occur if they are attempting to replace infertile eggs with fertile eggs. There must be a reason for the decline and the lack of control over the migratory path they take every year would be problematic. I am hoping for some follow-up that explains it. I sure hope this is successful and it is wonderful about the amount of money raised. It's a sign that people care.

The orange-bellied parrot was first bred successfully in 1973 by South Australian aviculturist Fred Lewitska, after five years with no success. He repeated his success in 1974 before being directed to release the birds into the wild by authorities.
It reads as if this guy was trying to set up a breeding program that got blocked by officialdom but we don't have the full story :(
