How many people make up a special plate for their birds on a occasion or event such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or birthdays? Do they eat with you or close by?

My birds always eat with me :D. Whatever I'm having, as long as it's bird-safe, I will share with them. With appropriate moderation for particular foods, of course.

I always eat lunch with birds. However, I have to be on guard for birdy thieves. My Bella will swoop down and do the snatch and grab. She has been known to try and take off with my pork chop...lol. I will usually have something ready for them so they don't go after my plate.

I eat lunch with mine, but Yoshi is soooooo messy, food goes flying everywhere and Quagmeyer (Lovebird) just prefers to walk through it.

I remember a story of an elderly lady I used to work with. She was telling me about her Macaw, I don't remember his name. She made herself chicken drumsticks and potatoes for dinner and took them to the living room. There was a knock at the door. She went to answer it and when she returned the drumstick was gone. He macaw had taken the drumstick and hid behind the window curtain. He was sitting on the windowsill eating her dinner. I don't think I have ever laughed so hard.

I give my cockatiels, Sassy and Shaggy such a diverse diet that they love,,except Shaggy..still hopefull. I've never tried to sit with dinner and birds. Shaggy might benefit, I'll give it a try.

Same here, although try as we might, we can't get Casper to share salad when we have it. He loves fish but is only allowed a little. He is given separate portions if ours has garlic, onions or tomatoes in the sauce. We give him tomato in with his fresh fruit but scrape out all the seeds first.
He is enjoying a corner of toasted gluten free bread with marmalade on at the moment as we are just having breakfast. Bread is home baked and marmalade home made with Seville oranges and ginger.

Mmmmmmm, love homemade bread. Never had marmalade, but that sounds good.
I bet casper jumps right in for that. Is there a lot of sugar in marmalade?

Do you make your own jams or preserves? Marmalade is very similar to jam except it uses citrus fruit with the addition of pieces of peel. So yes, there is lots of sugar. Casper does prefer sweet stuff and will, given the choice, go for fruits before veggies.

I know that other parts of the tomato plant (leaves, stems, etc.) are considered toxic. Or, perhaps you merely scrape out the seeds because Casper doesn't care for them? It's funny how we can offer two birds of the same or similar species an identical array of various foods and observe how each will accept or reject entirely different items than the other. They have such individual preferences.

Do you make your own jams or preserves? I have never tried to make jam. I should one day, my mother and husband love jam, as do my kids. I do canning throughout the year but only vegetables. I have a large garden in the back. There is nothing better than walking out to the backyard for a good healthy lunch.

Mmm fresh picked food always seems to taste better, unfortunately we have no vegetable plot in our garden but rely on gifts from neighbours with greener fingers than me. We offer to water their plants when they go away, which is often just as stuff is ripening and ready to pick haha.
Tony, thanks for the info on tomato seeds, I think I had read somewhere that there was doubt about them. We will probably carry on scraping as there will be less mess on the walls around the cage but don't need to be so thorough now :)
Also your comment should be amended to add that just one bird can change its mind about what it likes from one day to the next. Casper is not liking nuts this week. :)

Perhaps better exercise from the walls, however ;)

Not a lot of consistency among the things a parrot may tolerate eating from one day to the next. Unless of course the parrot is Salsa! Or unless we're talking about Zaf and his banana chips. He hates actual bananas but he will kill for the dried chips. Go figure :th_biggrin:

Neighbours helping neighbours Just the way it should be. I do love the vegetables in the garden. They are fresh and no chemicals. Pick, wash, and eat.
