I am looking at getting a 25 year old B&G that has never been caged. I am a little worried about this. He is coming from a older couple and my house will be a little noisier. The only time he comes off his perch is when startled. (other then play time with his owners) and that is only once a year she said.
I am going to try the uncaged for a while, but if it does not work what would be the best way to move him into one.
Also I use sleep cages. His owner said that when he gets tired he just turns his back. Again I have teens.... should I try a small perch in my room?
The perch in your room sounds like a good option. This bird you are speaking of, grew up with children in the home. Children that became teenagers and then left home. I only know this because, I almost brought him home, myself, and had talked to the owner many times. I was told, by the owners, that he missed a busy house, people coming and going. He sounds like a wonderful bird, Shelly, I know you will do well with him.

Oh cool! I did not have that info. That makes me feel a lot better! I cant wait to get him. This weekend I am putting up white shower board on the wall his perch will be in front of. I have wanted to do this forever but this is the perfect time!

Does he fly? Poor baby... "(other then play time with his owners) and that is only once a year she said" That is so sad. I hope you can create an area for him that is more interesting than just a perch to sit on. I would suggest you set him up with a nice big cage with a playtop, and have the cage door open. You might be surprised, he might like the comfort of an enclosed space to call his own. Maybe an atom, then a boing strung sideways from that to the cage. Expand his habitat horizontally, so he gets stimulation, exercise, and has fun things to do. I wish you the best with him. What's his name?

Sorry. I worded that wrong. He only jumps off when scared once a year. He gets played with daily.

I'd be looking towards a cage myself, and a more interesting playstand. I have both caged and uncaged macaws, but the uncaged are in a room designed and built to be safe for them, and mostly safe from them. A cage offers both a safe place for the bird to sleep, and spend time when you are out of the house, and opportunities to climb around, hang by one toenail, play with toys, etc., more physical exercise, and more mental stimulation, than just sitting on a perch all day.
