View Full Version : Cage aggression
I have a rather new to the family, U2 named Shaggy, I've had a couple episodes of being launched onto and bitten while she's hanging out on her living room cage. Not huge damage and my feelings aren't too hurt, I'm learning. I built her a perch out of pvc pipe that I can move around the room and into the kitchen area, for her to perch on. We do much better without the perching cage. Does anyone else experience this type of adventure? :)
Here is Shaggy on her new perch. She's much more agreeable on this contraption :)

Shaggy looks very happy on her pvc perch. My Sennie will not tolerate me cleaning his cage...even giving him a treat takes a special approach. But when I ask him if he wants a scritchy scratch, he lowers his head and shows me with his foot where he wants to be scratched. I can only clean his cage when he is away from it.
It doesn't sound like a cage aggression episode with Shaggy. Could it be something you are doing or not doing that has got her going? Were you messing with her cage when she bit you?
I would not want a cockatoo bite. My Sennie's bite is vicious enough.

Nash can be cage aggressive, but he is 100% food bowl aggressive and wants me dead whenever I try to move it.. it's like an obstacle course trying to give him more food!

Maynard indeed goes for blood when he's in his cage. Usually I'm quick enough to escape his wrath. But he manages to nail me now and then. He didn't use to be like that. In 2005 when Zaf came to live with us Maynard's aggression emerged on various levels, especially toward poor Jack. It doesn't sound like you're anywhere near having this problem with Shaggy. And that's good :). If you keep her below the top of your head it should help curtail her inclination to lunge. Her new PVC structure is a good start.
Thanks, folks! I maybe shouldn't call her "cage aggressive"..she has no problem with me working around food bowls or even cleaning her main cage, I can walk in and set up new perches, no big deal. It's the cage I set her on in the living room area that gets her territorial. I had been putting paper grocery bags on top for her to demolish and wow!..she gets into it!, her favorite activity, so far. I suppose she gets over stimulated working on this paper bag project, I'm learning to let her finish before I start cleaning up :)
