Hi everyone. I am from Colorado. I just inherited a 23 year old cockatiel named Clyde. He's not doing well so hoping to get some help and advice. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Precisely Parrots. Sorry to hear that Clyde is not doing so well. Can you tell us a little about him and what is wrong with him? Have you taken him to an Avian vet?

The lifespan of a cockatiel in captivity varies dependant on the quality of nutrition. We have one that was a rescue that's 22 years old and in great health. When you say yours isn't doing well...can you be more specific? What are you feeding him? While I am no substitute for an avian vet..there are ways to improve the overall health.I would say for reaching 23 years old he would be considered a senior. If your feeding only seed..you need to get him introduced to a pelleted diet.If he is slow and puffed up a vet would be best.We often will add a drop of organic apple cider vinegar to some of our birds water to help flush out irritants...you can also add a spoonful of high probiotic ,low sugar yogurt to the morning feedings. The apple cider vinegar flushes out the bad, while the yogurt( they like banana and fruit flavours) can help stabilize many digestive issues. If it's seizures he's experiencing....eggshells heated for 20 minutes at 200 degrees and then blended into powder can be added ...but only a pinch.Or depending on previous circumstances,he may just be reaching an age when things begin to go wrong.More details may offer more suggestions.A picture could also help.

Welcome to PP, as already mentioned, it would be good to have him examined by an avian vet as soon as possible because birds tend to hide any illnesses or injuries in case it displays weakness to predators. So if they are showing signs of illness it is usually pretty serious. He may just be reacting to the change of circumstances but it is best to make sure otherwise you might lose him.
Please keep us updated, now we are involved we will do our best to help.
