Any suggestions or recommendations it would be great

Dan
Hi, Dan! Welcome to our forum! I've only been around the cockatoo family of birds and know they can be challenging but rewarding. Are you looking to go with a big bird?

Welcome to Precisely Parrots Dan. Do you know if there are any regulations against owning certain birds in Australia?
I have an eclectus that is a medium sized bird. I also have two Superb ( Barrabands) that you may be able to get there.
Any specific traits you would like in your pet bird?

Hi Dragon lady,
thank u for the welcome . in most cases where parrots are concerned, they require a permit, i will get a permit . to be honest i would like a medium to large bird, i was keen on an amazon or an eclectus but i also like the African grey but that's out of my budget way too expensive in Australia. also very keen on miniature macaws . i guess talking ability wouldn't bother me , just want a good friendly bird :)

Hi Dan
I would suggest that a species from another continent rather than a bird that can be seen flying wild in Australia, so an Amazon is a good call, they are supposedly not as temperamental as an African Grey.
Think about getting a rescue bird that is not likely to outlive you, many older birds become homeless when their owners who have loved them for years die of old age or move into a care home and the poor birds are suddenly thrust into the totally alien environment of a sanctuary with very little one-on-one interaction.

I understand that rescues are limited in Australia so trying to find an older bird may be difficult. My Willy, an eclectus is very friendly and talkative. He is not a fan of being "petted" or touched. Although there is the thought that his diet may be harder to manage because he is an Ekkie, I have not found it so. He gets no pellets, some nuts and seeds and 90 % of his diet is fresh vegetables and fruits. Amazons are wonderful as well. There are some species that are friendlier and less hormonal than others. How are you planning on getting your parrot....pet store, breeder, newspaper ad?

Hi,
i wont purchase through pet stores, i find most of the times the birds are mistreated, they there to make a quick buck and they don't care about the bird. i will go through a breeder. what are your thoughts on black headed caique?
thanks

You shouldn't ask me about caiques....I love them! Their antics are hilarious, I did hear they could be loud. I have seen them "surfing" through their owner's hair. If I didn't have the combination of birds I have now, I definitely would be looking at getting one....so you are not getting an unbiased opinion...lol.
Check YouTube for videos of them, you will get a better feel for them when you see them in action.

Hello and Welcome Dan!! Glad you are here!
Thank you wingman :)
:th_hi: Dan :th_welcomesign:,
We're very glad you found us! How exciting that your looking into getting a forever friend! I have a mini mac, her name is Lady. She is awesome. I hear a Hahn's is a very friendly mini as well. There are so many great breeds to choose from, it could be difficult to settle on which species.
What about an avian vet? Is there one within a reasonable distance from you that you will be considering on becoming your vet once you bring your bird into your home? And have you thought about a cage for your new baby too? These are just some of the things you need to consider as you search for your new family member.

Hello lady,
thank you for the warm welcome,
there is a vet around me about 30 minutes drive. if i was to get a cage i would buy the biggest cage as i would want my baby bird to be comfy and spread its wings, so confused as i love all parrots. at this stage very keen on a miniature mac and eclectus or an amazon, i'm growing fond of a black face caiques. just hoping someone would stir me in the right direction :) most important i want a docile bird

Does noise level matter to you? For the most part, my Ekkie is pretty quiet, but at least a couple of times a day, he will let out a screech that someone described as sounding like a fire alarm and a chimpanzee mixed together. It can still make me jump every now and again. Amazon's are pretty laid back too, but they can let go with a couple of good eardrum destroying calls as well.
Is there someplace where you could visit to see any of the birds you are interested in? Characteristics of each species can be subjective based on a lot of factors.
I am excited for you...brings back memories when I first got back into birds.

You tube will potentially have lots of videos on the birds you are interested in. You may be able to see them in the wild and as a pet that someone has.
Oh look what I found on the net Dan

In our case Casper was my Mother's pet, she had a stroke which immobilised her and the poor bird was kept in a tiny cage for over ten years with just a bell for amusement and a totally unsatisfactory diet. Once my father died we were able to take control of the situation and Casper came to live with us when we moved my mother into a care home.
My mother had bought the bird when she was in her fifties with scant regard for what would happen to a bird as long lived as an Amazon, she just wanted one because her friends had a cockatoo.
There must be many situations similar to this in your country as well, you could perhaps make enquiries with social services.
Casper has really improved in the four years he has been living with us and we can tell he appreciates his much improved lifestyle, he is rarely shut in his cage and in good weather spends a fair bit of time in a tree in the garden or on our sailing boat and has never had the desire to fly off.

thank you i will keep a look out, hopefully i would come cross a situation where i can help a bird :)
Well Dan,
I was thinking more as a place you could go and visit with the birds they have as well as possible adoption. Birds that are available for adoption by a good rescue have worked with the bird to get them socialized so they can go to a new home. There are many wonderful birds that have been given a second chance to find the right family to love and be taken good care.
Well, I found this site also.

So, are you any closer to choosing what kind of Parrot you would like to have? There are so many beautiful birds....it's going to be hard to choose.

Hi Dan and welcome! Sorry for the late welcome.
My personal favorite medium birds are male ekkies. I don't know what it is but I just adore them. If you wanted a bit bigger, blue throat macaws are another favorite of mine. Sweet cuddle bugs but very mechanical.
I only have Rosie my GW, we jumped right into extra large for our first parrot. :) She will be our only parrot, but the above are on my "dream" list, along with a hy. I have just visited with and cuddled them but they made lasting impressions. :)

hello dragonlady,
unfortunately i was waiting for a breeder to get back to me with a list and some advice, but i guess he isnt that keen on getting business off me, so back to square one have to look for another breeder or maybe adopt an older bird

That's unfortunate. Have you narrowed it down to a specific bird yet or are you still looking at what is available?
