I'm looking for a new cage for my greenwing. He's gone though 4 cages in his 11 years. Current cage is held together with chains and pad locks. I'm willing to spend money on a SS cage if thats what it will take. So far it seems like all the cages I've checked out have gotten bad reviews. Any suggestions?

Hi there, I don't own a macaw so I am not much help in the cage department. I am sure others that own macaws will be able to advise you. Is your greenwing breaking welds? What brands have you used so far?

Yes, he breaks welds and breaks door locks. His last cage was an Avian Adventures. Which he escaped from 20 minutes after being put in it. So he got moved back into his old cage which is chained and pad locked. Fortunately I have 2 other big macs so one of them got a brand new cage which she has never escaped from.

King's cages makes a stainless steel cage. One of the testamonials came from a woman who has a greenwing and she was quite happy with it. The model she had was 508SS. Apparently there is free shipping in the US. You could check their site and ask some questions about durability.

I had a Kings cage several years ago and when I tried to wheel it outside to clean it the legs on one side broke off. A bad experience to say the least.
:th_hi: Bruce,
You sure have your work cut out for you. There are many cages available but if I had such a strong bird I would surely make my inquiries like Helena suggested. Lots of time on the phone with the potential seller and a guarantee would be nice. I have quite a bookmarked section of cages I'm interested in but have not purchased. If you check out this link you could call the manufactures and see if any may fit your needs.

The cage you want is an Expandable Habitats. Glad that you are willing to spend the $$$ because that is all they make at this time. These cages are made here in the US, actually in Illinois, and don't use the cheaper grade of SS. You will want the cage to be double welded which a Hy won't be able to pop, so no worries there.
I own 3 of their cages and can attest to their quality. The first one I got was back in '94 and there is no damage or rust anywhere. I ordered my second cage in '06 when I found I needed another cage and I did not even consider shopping around to see if there was anything else better on the market since I bought the first, I just called up and said to start making me another cage. I was able to find a used one but I don't know the age on that one but again, no issues.
Finding a used EH in a large enough size will be nearly impossible to find. There are 3 of us looking for a Macaw size one that we would pounce upon if one came up. There is one used one out there now but it is only 36x36 which would be too small for a Mac but great for a 'Too.
Animal Environments has SS cages that a lot of people have and I actually have one as a spare right now but my preference is still the EH. If you chose to go that route and buy one used, that would be ok but I would STRONLY tell you to not order one new. The web site shows a pic of the 'factory' back in the '70 or maybe that is the '80's. It is another company occupying the space. All the pics on the web site are before the big divorce and Carmen runs things from her home now. There is no factory, anywhere. It took me 9 months to finally get the plastic connectors that hold the top of the cage onto the sides of the Luxor model. That top is heavy and easy to break those clips when it was being taken down. Carmen is great at always giving you a different excuse of where your cage is when it is long past the time promised. A friend has a friend who ordered a cage from Carmen and 2 years later she still had not gotten it.
Go with the EH cage and you will receive it when promised and be happy with the durability of it.
