View Full Version : Thinking about adopting..
Mi Amigo has left an empty space in my life, I will always love and miss him. I miss having a big bird and am thinking about adopting. Umbrella Cockatoos have a special place in my heart and I know about how many are given up because they are so misunderstood.
I'm thinking about driving a few hours to check out a bird shelter, it would be in the bay area for me. Tim asked me, last week, if I would ever want another big bird and what kind...I'm thinking I might want to give a macaw a run for it's money but if a large cockatoo wants to take me on..let's GO!!
Any thoughts..?..
..damn it, Amigo..why'd you have to leave..?..I miss your strength, your heart..and just, you

Any bird would have to be daft not to want to live at Mare and Tim's homestead. :) I am sure if you ask a rescue Cockatoo nicely they will consider themselves very lucky.

I think if you feel ready for another big bird you should check out the shelter. It's awesome that you would take in another rescue/ older bird. My only caution to you is mixing a macaw with a too(Sassy). Just from what I have read is that Macaws have issues with the powder/ dust from a too. If you have a good air filtration system, it could work as I have seen people manage to have both species. Dave would probably be able to assist with this.
I agree with Jean-Pierre, there would be no better home than yours.
Thank you, Jean-Pierre and Helena :). I know I can give a good home to one in need. The 'Too dust may be a concern but I do run good quality air filters and if it happens..I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a cockatoo :)

Mare, I know the empty raw hurt you are feeling, all to well...When COCO Bird, my Moluccan Cockatoo died in my arms 15 years ago, and then recently my Rose Breasted Cockatoo Kiwi, it's been a year this August . Nothing will ever replace them, but you have so much love to give another, each are special and unique.
A macaw sounds like a new adventure in the world of Parrots ! What about a bonded pair, bonded pair doesn't always mean male and female, just bonded, I prefer to have bonded pairs, in my personal experience with birds, I find them to be calmer , no issues with neurotic stuff . I have a very good relationship with my bonded pair, we interact as a flock, if I'm not around they have each other to interact with.
You have that wonderful property ...why not build an outdoor flight for them, it could be a sanctuary of sorts, all kinds of creative things you could enhance it with, large tree trunks to climb on, sitting area for visitors, various natural elements. They could fly in a safe environment.

I think adopting is a wonderful idea.I think any bird would be lucky to join your family.Macaws are great...different character than cockatoos...a good air filter takes care of the dander.Just remember that you will never replace Amigo...you will be starting a new adventure with a bird with new character.Im not sure you would ever luck into one you would want to let have the same freedom ...but sometimes the new adventure and character can help one heal From a loss.

If you do get a macaw.. I suggest a GW macaw! They are very cuddly for macaws, just like your 'too! Also a bunch of amazons from the hoarding case are going to be sent to Utah ( not sure if that's where you're from but I knwo that you are near there-ish ) to a rescue who has enough room to take them... if you live near or in Utah for sure check them out too. zons are awesome!
Thanks for the input, folks! Suzanne, I'm so sorry for your loss of birds, I know you feel as I do. A bonded pair could be interesting, I'll definitely check it out. Tim and I have been discussing putting in a large, outdoor flight aviary.
I know I could never replace Amigo, I wouldn't even try..he was one of a kind. I'm always up for adventure, though! I'm going to see what's out there and see who I mesh with. Utah is quite a drive for me Savannah, I don't think I could do it one day's drive, thanks for the thought!

I think this is an awesome idea Mare!! Whether it be a too or Mac, you will have a great companion. Another parrot in need deserves the love you can give. :)
Greys also are known for lots of dander and I have 2 Macs. I use a simple box fan and filter near Quincy's cage to keep the dander under control. My Mac's have been fine.

I also agree on a Green wing macaw. They are gentle giants. Either way, I have a feeling the bird will choose you no matter what species. You will know "the one" when you find him/her. ;)
Good luck!

I can't wait to hear what you decide!! Very exciting!
GWs are known as gentle giants, but Rosie didnt really get the memo on that. She pinches me more times than I can count in a day. Simply because...it's fun! She doesn't do it to hurt but she isn't gentle either. She is loving and a very good companion (if you like a bossy companion...lol) So just be aware that just bc a type of parrot is supposed to have specific qualities, it's not always the way it is. They all have their very own personalities, just like us. But I know you know this!!
Whomever you are supposed to rescue will find you and steal your heart. I'm sure Amigo will help steer you to someone amazing! Can't wait to meet them.

Blue throated Macaws are supposed to be more cockatoo like as far as cuddly goes , smallest of the big Macaws, They have a beautiful teal color to their feathers. I was tempted to get one awhile back.

Blue Throats are on my dream list. Rosie had one that was her neighbor when she was a baby at the store. Sweetest bird ever. But they are SUPER mechanical. Can take their cage apart no problem and then take everyone else's apart for them as well. Lol

You could rescue a blue throat ...just putting out ideas, sometimes breeders need to rehome birds or even bonded pairs. cant hurt to research all venues

Mare, no not a rescue, but their out your way, maybe you could give them a call they may have some leads !
Blue-throated macaws come from the tropical savannahs and woodlands of Central Bolivia and occasionally have been found in Argentina. These macaws are dependant upon palm trees, which are destroyed to make cattle grazing land or cropland. Habitat destruction has ravaged their numbers and it is believed that there are fewer than 200-300 birds left in the wild. This makes captive breeding quite important, as it remains the largest hope for the future of this macaw species.
Blue-throated macaws are often mistaken for the Blue and Gold macaw.
They are somewhat different in appearance however and somewhat smaller in size, ranging between 29-32 inches in length. These macaws have a teal-blue throat, forehead, neck, tail and wings with matching feather stripes over a naked face patch. These blue green feathers have a stunning metallic sheen. They have yellow wing undersides, bodies and breasts and a narrow, black, specially adapted, chisel shaped beak with long lower jaws that allow them to scoop the pulp out from palm fruits.
This rare macaw makes a wonderful companion bird and has a loving, undemanding, docile personality.
These birds are friendly, curious and tend to be surprisingly calm in social situations. They are "monkey" birds and it is not unusual to find them hanging from one toenail while eating a nut from their other foot. Blue-throateds enjoy human and avian interaction and are very mellow and docile enjoying hands-on interaction and affection with their people.
They are also quite able to entertain themselves and will entertain you for hours with their crazy antics.
These macaws are ideal for the beginner or as apartment birds as they do not scream like other macaws and rarely, if ever, bite, choosing to flee rather than fight if they feel threatened.
They are good talkers and can learn quite a vocabulary. One unusual feature about these birds is that they blush bright red around the cere area and the area adjacent to the mandible when they are excited, creating a red stripe.
Blue-throateds are avid wood chewers and need plenty of wood to help prevent boredom. It should be noted that they are expert mechanics and can easily open just about anything. Unless your cage is very well designed expect that your blue-throated will find a way out unless the cage is padlocked!
Thank you, Suzanne! I will give them a call! You all don't know me personally, only virtually. If character reference is needed..would you all work. .? I also have many family members and friends that would vouch for me..ok..I might be covered..

However tempting this is to me, Suzanne, after some thought,, I'm not quite ready to take on such a huge commitment! My heart is still tender over losing Amigo and I think I'm still in the thinking stage of adopting. I think about it a lot but not quite ready to pull the trigger :). I know myself well enough that when I decide the time is right, I WILL have a new large bird, I WILL make the trips to see who's available and who wants to be with me. Thank you so much for your efforts..how about you?! Are these the ones you were thinking about a while ago?

Me too Mare ,I hear ya  since you started this post, this was my contribution, to the cause. I just put it out their. Don't know if it would-be fair to my existing dynamics within my own flock, and the well being of these Bonded Blue throats. That is holding me back. Although they are wonderful, and truly needing a forever home as all captive birds, I must put aside my own desires and think about what I already have to provide for.
Whatever you decide Mare, I wish only the best outcome :colorflash:

You are pretty intuitive Mare. I think you will know when the time is right and it's the right feathered friend when it happens. It sounds to me that you are seeking that special friend/connection and taking the time to make such an important decision may be wise.
