Chip and Jellybean had unfortunately laid one more clutch before I separated them. Jellybean is now in a cage where Chip can visit her from the outside..no more hanky-panky for these two!

The first one to hatch was on the day we lost Mi Amigo, July 18. The other two came around three days later. I thought Chip and Jellybean were doing a good job but when I started seeing them both out of the nest box at the same time, I knew something wasn't right. I pulled them and we've been hand feeding them since then.

They are so tiny and helpless that we can't help but love them..even if they're a little bit ugly :)

Oh boy! Time to eat!!

Mare, remember the childhood story about the "ugly duckling" that turned into the most beautiful swan !

I notice on your counter you use "Image Skincare" Image is one of the primary professional skincare lines that I use and recommend in my esthetic practice . "PCA skin" is also first rate.

Looks like you are doing a wonderful job with the handfeeding. The chicks may not be the most beautiful, but you have to love it when they come to you for food, neck stretched and mouth open. So cute!

I'm not sure if a beautiful swan is in their cards but they will be cute and FRIENDLY! I'm excited about having some hand tame cockatiels :)

My daughter, Kate, is a massage therapist and works with a friend who is an esthetician. Kate get's this product at cost and keeps me supplied..she always knows what I want/need for my birthday and Christmas :). I'll ask her about the "PCA skin" product.

Helena, I hope I'm doing a good job..they sure have an appetite, I have to be careful not to over feed them. I think they would eat till they popped!

Tony, I agree..they definitely have dinosaur DNA. They even sound like them!!

Yep, parrots evolved from dinosaurs and humans evolved ears that parrots can hang onto to stop from slipping off your shoulder. Argue with that Darwin deniers. :)

Thanks, I hope so. I'm more or less just running with what feels right. I've read lots but actually doing it is scarier than reading it!

I actually think the babies are kind of cute in a weird way. Brings back memories when I was handfeeding my little robin. Will you keep them all?

Mare
08-05-2016, 08:04 PM
Will I keep them all? Good question, Helena. I might let one go but only to someone special who I know would give it a great home. Since I don't know any bird folks besides you all..I may end up keeping them, we'll see.

Once you raise them Mare, you're probably not going to be able to even part with one. Better get their accommodations ready....lol.

Gee Mare,
If you do keep them all, will you have to make their housing dorm style so they don't have babies of their own when the time comes?

Mare
08-07-2016, 02:23 PM
Alice, I'll for sure have to keep the males separate from the females, they've proven to be a very prolific species!

I took this pic yesterday, they are getting bigger everyday..going on three weeks tomorrow. I have a question..

[Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]

...they get so excited AT feeding time and even AFTER being fed, they will grab each other's beaks and quickly bob like they are being fed by each other!? I'm assuming this is just natural instinct, my concern is..should I be concerned that they are going to hurt each other's beak by doing this?..does that make sense?..

Dragonlady2
08-07-2016, 03:27 PM
Those babies are so cute, Mare! You are doing a wonderful job with them.

As for them hurting each other with their beaks....I don't know for sure, but this probably happens with other clutches, maybe someone else has a good answer for you.Do they stay in that container? Maybe they need more room?

Mare
08-07-2016, 04:29 PM
Thanks, Helena! Yes, they are getting cuter every day :). I keep them in this Tupperware bowl most of the time. This bowl sits in a ten gallon fish tank, with a screen lid, that is also lined with paper towels and pine shavings. At feeding time, I pull them out of the bowl to run around in the tank, they are hilarious the way they run after each other's beaks and get to tumbling onto their backs! I pull them out to feed, one at a time, then back into the bowl. They eventually settle into one big birdie bundle to nap.

I worry that as their beaks become harder, they might hurt each other.

@Cedardave ([Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks]) probably would have a good answer to your concern

Its a natural reaction after feeding. They use the interaction to both clean one anothers beaks and express dominance in trying to take any food that may be left there. As we all know, birds mimic..there is a slight componant of the feeding action being reproduced to one another...often this never really goes away.As for injuring one another...it depends at what stage of developement each of them are at.They likely hatched one every other day or so.The beak of the oldest is going to be only marginally stronger than the youngest.Injury is not impossable..but unlikely...to the beak. The bigger concern is to keep an eye on the toes oddly enough.Because the feet are so bendy and the bones have yet to harden, they can be suseptable to unintentional amputation by their clutchmates. This isnt a common occurance, but does happen.Be cautious also to begin allowing them opportunity to perch. They are still quite small, but to offer a low securelace to perch will prevent them from developing splayed leggs(the legs spread and grow further apart than normal). They look pretty happy and healthy.Well done

Thank you, Dave! As far as the perch thing, I'm reading that around four weeks to introduce them to a cage with a low perch. Do I need to set this baby on the perch to demonstrate how this works?..or will he/she figure it out on it's own? I also have a question about the tiny feet at this age. The oldest one, I've been noticing, has one of it's rear toes, wanting to point forward. Should I encourage it to go back where it belongs or will that happen on it's own..? I surely appreciate any advice you have, thank you!

Dragonlady2

Interesting that the baby birds may potentially injure the toes of their clutchmates. I have seen lots of ads indicating that the babies lost a toe while in the nest, but most of the time it was implied that it was done by a parent. Makes sense that the babies would also do this unintentionally.
Mare, you have received some very good information from Dave. Good thing we have someone on PP that can assist you while you are going through this. You will probably be able to assist others who may be experiencing this once you've raised these little ones.
Keep those pictures coming.

For sure, Helena! Dave is the go to guy when bringing up babies, I appreciate his knowledge and help! I will gladly share whatever I learn along my journey, also :). I'll try and get some new pics up later today. If I can get Tim to help me with some pics, I'll hold them in my hands so you can see how big the little pin cushions are getting!

Cedardave

Mare if you can get the toe into its natural position somehow that would be ideal.Otherwise as the bones harden it will stay where it is now.You may have to get creative with a popsicle stick and some medical tape for a couple days.As for the perching...they will figure it out on their own.We usually place them on the perch when we put them back after feeding.

Mare
08-09-2016, 01:22 AM
Thanks, Dave! The toes are starting to figure things out, I sure appreciate your advice :). I started today, to bring the little ones out, one at a time, to hang out with me, giving them some one on one loving and scritches for around 15mins. at a time. They are starting to tolerate me and my ways so I think we might be on a good path :)

These three are growing up SO FAST! They each are gaining between 5 and 6 grams a day! What do you think about the color of the pins on the baby on the left? Does that mean he/she will be yellow or whitish?

Chip is the male so I think the one that looks like he has a lot of yellow coming in just might be taking after his daddy.
Maybe the other two are girls because they have the more grey like Jellybean? Guess we will have to wait and see them when they are in full feather.

Mare

Theses are the two smaller of the three..Tim is holding the third one and he/she is mostly feathered except around the head. From the looks of their coloring so far, Alice I think you might be correct in thinking the more yellow one is probably male. I've temporarily named them..Teeny, Tiny and Mo. Going from smallest, (the yellowish one) to the biggest,(the first one hatched). I'm keeping a chart of their daily weight and how many ml's they are getting at each feeding time so I needed to call them SOMEthing! :)

Thank you, Suzanne! They've been a lot of fun to watch change almost daily. Mo's feathers, on the right, have been breaking out of their pins, he's starting to groom himself with his beak and falls over when trying to scratch his head with his foot :)

I'm pretty sure the names won't stick, their personalities are developing and I see many possibilities for name changes! :). Thanks, Blanca, I'm pretty sure I'm a natural mom, like most of us here.

The crew has out grown their Tupperware bowl so they are now, full time, in the aquarium with millet, seed, water and soft food bowl. I'm still syringe feeding them baby formula 4-5 times a day/night but want them to start getting the idea..it's not going to last forever!! :). Mo, the biggest/oldest is bold and adventuresome, she's been chewing on the millet and I saw her take a dip in the water bowl!

They can be a bit rebellious at first but then settle in and by the time I settle them back in..all is good :)
