What do you think is the most popular pet bird type

Interesting question. I see a lot of African Greys, Conures and cockatiels. It might also depend on availability in the area a person lives. In the province I live in now, there are very few species available compared to a more populated province like Ontario. There may be even more species in the US?

I think it's a toss between Budgies, Cockatiels , Canaries, and Finches

budgies or cockatiels for sure!

I would say budgies and cockatiels. They are easy to purchase and I think more readily available and easy to care for then the larger birds.

I agree with the cockatiel but I also see alot of information about the African Gray so I think they are somewhere close to the top. Many want a parrot who will talk.
