Here are pics of my Coqui. I've had her since Oct 2013. She is 12 years old now. She unfortunately started picking her feathers in the beginning of May. :( After running a bunch of tests the vet confirmed it was nothing physical and that she is picking due to hormones. Which I suspected in the beginning. The problem is she could make this a habit. Which I'm hoping she won't. I've done everything I can to help her get through it now it's just a waiting game to see if she will stop. I will say that the picking has slowed down. Anyway, here are some pics of my sweet little chicken!

Hopefully Coqui will allow her feathers to fully recover. I remember a bit about her past and certainly when she came to live with you, Blanca. I'm aware that some birds who have transferred from previous homes seem more prone toward plucking than others. And B&Gs are often high strung birds, which I expect may exacerbate such proneness in certain cases. Coqui's past may have nothing to do with her plucking issue, though. You would know better than anyone about that. My B&G, Jack, began plucking small areas on the tops of his wings and shoulders shortly after Zaf arrived here in 2005. Zaf's presence somehow disrupted Jack's relationship with my Military Macaw, Maynard. His plucking has persisted to the point that he now has some permanent bald patches. He is the only plucker of my four.

Wonderful photos! Thanks for sharing :)

Yes she does! I have been having fun making them! If it becomes a long term issue at least I can make her stuff to keep her warm! ;)

Of all my birds, I am not surprised that it was Coqui that started plucking. She has always been high strung and has had anxiety. She always would grab her back tail feathers and bring them forward and hold them like a security blanket. So her back feathers always looked mangled. The previous owners said she always did this. She didn't really have someone who spent a lot of time with her when she was in Puerto Rico. She really only had a little interaction with the house staff and gardeners. I think she was purchased as a garden ornament as she stayed in an outside 8x8 aviary. The woman who I adopted her from was the daughter in law of the original owner and would visit her a few times a year and actually interact with her. The original owner was 80 years old when her husband bought 9 month old Coqui for her. When she was in her 90's she decided she was too old to have a bird, Coqui was now 9, so they gave her to the son and daughter in law because Coqui liked the daughter in law as she intereact with her the most. They took her with the intention of finding her a forever home which ended up being me. They had her for 10 months. The son was horrible at reading her body language and would push her to the point she would bite him and draw blood. I think he is the reason she bites and lacks confidence around people. This poor girl didn't come from the best situation and I think years of anxiety from her prevous living conditions and now the dreaded hormones have just made her anxiety worse and now she is plucking. :( Nothing really major has changed in the last 6 months and the timing of her plucking and where she is plucking seems to indicate hormones. My vet said B&G females are more prone to have this issue than other macaw species. All I can do is get her through it, keep her busy, make sure she knows she is loved and cherished and hope for the best. But no matter what, I will always love my naked chicken even if it doesn't go away!

Sorry for the long post Tony! I know all of you remember when I got Coqui but I thought I would share some of her background. I really appreciate you sharing your experience with Jack. It really does help! :)

Aww, I went to some previous post and got to see a pic of her pinning her eyes, she's really cute! I tried a different browser and couldn't see your blog pics but could at least read about some of your adventures. It might be my security that is keeping me from viewnig it clearly.

Blanca, does Coqui allow her feathers to grow back during half the year?.. (She is a beauty, by the way)..I only ask because Sassy plucks her chest bald but only half the year,, the other half, she lets it grow back. I'm pretty sure it's her hormones.

Actually Mare, I don't know yet since she only started this year. That is what I'm hoping for. She started in May so I'm hoping she will let them grow back when summer is over. It's good to hear Sassy allows her feathers to grow back half the year. So my fingers are crossed!! ;)

I think the hood is part of the harness. Blanca makes her own harnesses.
