Does anyone feed their bird chicken bones? My Sassy girl LOVES them. I will buy chicken thighs, (that I also love), specifically for my Sassy girl..cooked, of course! Sassy likes to crack into the marrow of the bone. None of my other birds will accept this form of carnivorism.

I don't feed bones, but all of my birds will chow down on a piece of cooked chicken or turkey. They probably get some once a month.

Bentley loves chicken bones , actually they like to scoop-out the marrow. Folks tend to think birds only eat seed and vegetables, fruit., in nature they do eat protein, worms , bugs & other sources. Opportunistic Omnivores...

Other species =sourced from WIKIPEDEIA

Various birds are omnivorous, with diets varying from berries and nectar to insects, worms, fish, and small rodents. Examples include cassowaries, chickens, crows[48] and related corvids, keas, rallidae, and rheas. In addition, some lizards, turtles, fish (such as piranhas and catfish), and invertebrates are also omnivorous.

Quite often, mainly herbivorous creatures will eagerly eat small quantities of animal food when it becomes available. Although this is trivial most of the time, omnivorous or herbivorous birds, such as sparrows, often will feed their chicks insects while food is most needed for growth.[49] On close inspection it appears that nectar-feeding birds such as sunbirds rely on the ants and other insects that they find in flowers, not for a richer supply of protein, but for essential nutrients such as cyanocobalamin that are absent from nectar. Similarly, monkeys of many species eat maggoty fruit, sometimes in clear preference to sound fruit.[50] When to refer to such animals as omnivorous, or otherwise, is a question of context and emphasis, rather than of definition.

We haven't tried Casper on chicken bones yet but we did offer him some mealworms meant for the garden birds and he was not impressed.

I suspect that Casper would love a cooked chicken bone. I live with vegetarians/vegans..all around me! I know how good a juicy morsel is!

I will certainly give him one to try.
Safety warning for dog owners (you probably know this already): chicken bones are not safe for dogs because the bones splinter and can get stuck in their throat.

That's a good point, Jean-Pierre! Light years ago, I worked for a vet. We had a dog come in with an abscess near his butt hole. A chicken bone had pierced his intestine and was making it's way out!

I hear you Mare...I am a meat eater, and preferably barbecued.

I am too nervous to give my birds chicken bones. I worry about the splinters.

Thinking it through, parrots tend to split things apart to get at the content (pea pods, ball-point pens, that sort of thing), they don't just crunch the whole lot and gorge like dogs do. So I am going to say that chicken bones are unlikely to be swallowed but might be accidentally impaled on by a careless bird if not supervised.

If any one of my birds were to impale themselves on a chicken bone..it would be the Sassy girl. She loves a bit of meat and gristle left on the bone, too..just in case you try this :)

I am going to see if my bigger birds will try this. I gave my Ekkie, almonds in the shell...I couldn't find the shell anywhere after he ate it, so my concern would be that he would also think the bone will be edible. Won't know until I try.

Birds are so stinkin' smart, I'm guessing you won't have an issue! :)

I haven't tried chicken bones with the birds yet, although the book Birds for Dummies does mention that some birds do like the bones, not only for marrow but for cracking them. The only protein I have given Charlie is scrambled eggs and almonds. I haven't tried those with Peanut yet although he hasn't met a food that he doesn't like.

I always feel guilty when I give Charlie scrambled eggs, like it is a form of cannibalism :th_eek:

For this reason, it's best to cut the meat away from any bones offered to our birds.

Michelle, I had the same thought when feeding my birds chicken eggs and bones. I learned that because they are a different species of bird, it's not cannibalism. Although..super gross thought!

Lol Mare, great minds think alike. That is the only reason why I give the eggs to Charlie is because I know they are different species but I still feel guilty.

Magpies and seagulls are quite happy to feast on eggs they pinch from other bird's nests.

Casper was out in the garden today on his branch in the Magnolia tree. He had a bit of a disappointment when a blackbird with a beak full of worms landed next to him and didn't offer him any. Margaret had to explain that the worms were for the baby blackbirds.

Lady is definitely a meat eater. I use to allow her to have chicken on the bone and haven't had a problem but somewhere along the way I stopped giving them to her and only allow her the meat. Silly girl would even take a cooked crab claw from my plate if I let her!

They are subject to protein intoxication. As such, they probably shouldn't eat very much meat. And some species have a significantly lower tolerance for protein than others. I think it's always best to favor the safe side.

He sure does. Wouldn't want to be the one to take it from him.
