Fascinating reading, especially the bizarre vitamin D situation. Isn't that the vitamin that you get from sunlight? I suppose it would make sense that a nocturnal bird would evolve to have low vit D. But that doesn't explain why the chicks need so much. The article states that the mothers feed the chicks 500g of fruit a night - that's more than Caspers body weight.

Jean-Pierre....I've seen that video. I couldn't help myself, but laughed and laughed. The poor man, and the poor bird, thinking he was getting "lucky".

Thank you, for the article, Helena! I was searching and couldn't find the photos/posts I put up on when my daughter was in New Zealand. The Kea bird reminds me of this Kakapo bird
