Heading out for 7 days in Vermont tomorrow. Just got back from a nail trim and wing clipping visit. Nike had gotten some of her feathers back and attitude has been bit challenging with her new found mobility. The house isn't bird proof and the other day as we were walking past the opened front door (screen door in place) like we've done dozens of times before she jumped off my hand and flew right into the screen door. That was enough to convince me that this had to be nipped (clipped) in the bud before we took her camping again.
I know that she could still get away in the right conditions when clipped, I just see it as extra insurance as you must know I'm very careful with her.

Well good luck with the weather, we have had a lot of thunderstorms, one of which caused our river to burst its banks. It came up really quickly... so take care and make sure you camp on the higher ground, there's nothing worse than getting out of bed in the morning and finding yourself ankle deep in water.

I've seen how you "camp" :). I hope you have an enjoyable trip! The temps look pleasing..we hit 111 degrees here, today! Ugh..
Enjoy your trip. Looking forward to hearing all about your adventure when you come home and get situated.

Haven't even taken my camera out this trip. Nike has been enjoying the outside spending most of the days outside in her cage. We just came back from a 3 mile hike. The weather is sunny and breezy... gorgeous!
Here's Nike and Corbin getting settled after the hike.

Did Nike do the hike in the backpack?

Did Nike do the hike in the backpack?
Yes, we didn't use it much thus far because she's been outside in her cage much of the week but today was so nice I had to bring her.

The weather looks like it is cooperating with you. Does Nike like being in her backpack? Does she look around or vocalize?
I love reading about your camping adventures with Nike. Have a wonderful trip and yes be safe~

She does chirp and do some vocalization but I think she tolerates it more than likes it. It must be a workout for a bird not used to being in swinging branches.
She doesn't fight me going in and often isn't in a hurry to get out.

Thanks for the input. I would like to take my birds out for a stroll, but I am not sure if they will be happy or if it will make me happy thinking they are happy....lol. Once we move, I might give it a try.

I feel that the pack is more of a means to be Mobile with your bird, which in the end should make both you and the bird happier. Most of my walks have been mainly to get Nike used to the pack. The other day I used it to take her for grooming and it was way easier than using a cat carrier or her travel cage...and she talked the entire way to and from the groomer...2 hour round trip.
Believe it or not most people won't even notice that you have a bird if you're using the small pack....they just look right past it because they're not looking for a bird in there.

Walking behind Margaret and Casper I can see he does get bounced about a bit in the backpack, even on level ground and yes, people are sometimes very startled when the backpack says "hello" :)

I'm still experimenting with the perch position. I think I need to raise it up more as the tips of Nike's tail feathers get smushed a bit from the bouncing. she still pushes her butt up abainst the back of the pack which directs her tail feathers straight down and apparently during some bumps they touch.

Kiki loved going hiking in her pack. We would put fruit and veggies with high water content in the cups to prevent splashing, like watermelon, that seemed to keep her hydrated for short jaunts, then we'd have an extra bowl to fill with water at the stops.

We're home...for 2 days then I go out alone for a guy's weekend.
Nike put on a real show for about 5 giggling girls and a parent. She gets all excited when there's a lot of talking going on and especially laughing. She loves to laugh when people are laughing and of course that caused the girls to laugh even more. She went through her entire vocabulary (that we know about since December) and was really having a blast.
On a separate note, two weeks ago I thought she said "I love you" but she only said it once. The other day she said it one more time so I know she has that in the back of her brain just waiting to come out.
She's a great camper, as is my dog Corbin and even the cat (one of 5) that we have to bring along to administer meds to.
Corbin was pooped by the end and ready to come home,

What great adventures your critters get to have, it's apparent how much they are cared for and loved.
I'm sure once Nike is confident enough to start talking, she'll be being saying I love you, and really mean it.

I bet she'll have lots to say soon. All that social interaction means she could be soaking in all sorts of vocabulary. "I love you" may be just the tip of the iceberg. What a fun life you give her and the other animals!
