I was driving home from town this morning and out of my thoughts, pops a very memorable moment with one of my birds. Are you ever talking with someone and they say.."remember that?"..umm..noo, may be my answer BUT..I know, for myself, that there are memories that I can recant exactly (almost), as they happened even back to when we first brought Amigo home. Most are traumatic/biting/chewing down the house/being attacked by a hawk..etc..memories, but I can remember them like it was yesterday!

Let's hear some of your most memorable bird stories :)

Hang on I'll have to wait until I am sober again - we've just been out to dinner.

I suppose, short term memory does count! :). What brought on Bentley's attack?!

Well, before he will step-up on my hand he has to throw himself on the bottom of the cage or floor wherever he is perched. I was in a hurry and didn't want to wait for his body slamming routine, and so therefore I got nailed. I 'm used to the pain
I suppose I'm a glutton for punishment. :numbness:

Fricken' birds.. :(. My only thought on this is..these poor sentients are what they are..birds that were born to be free..in theory. Thank you, Suzanne!

Righto, sober now but I think the restaurant tried to poison me with gluten so I'm in for a few shaky days.
Anyway, back to the plot, lets start at the beginning...
Casper was my mother's bird and lived in a tiny cage in the kitchen. My mother had a stroke and was in a wheelchair. My father didn't have much time for Casper, enjoyed teasing him, fed him only on sunflower seeds (because "that was all he would eat") and some fruit and veg. For ten years Casper was a prisoner in that tiny cage with just a bell to play with. "Don't put paper in the bottom of the cage he just chews it up" we were told by my dad.
As soon as my dad died we immediately got Casper a suitable sized cage but the problem was getting him out of his old one. Trying to persuade him every way we could think of until eventually Margaret just reached in and grabbed him. She can be very brave and has had lots of experience getting spiders out of the bath.
From that day on Casper has used "come on then" whenever he wants us to do something. :)

I remember scary things with Rosie perfectly. Funny how that is.

On a not scary note, I remember our first meeting with Rosie. We had someone bring her to the family room for us to visit with her. All the other parrot parents were cuddling with fluffy, sweet balls of feathers. Rosie, on the other hand, was gently placed on my lap and immediately got off and started running around the couch we were on like a loon. She would not sit still, would not cuddle and complained very loudly if she was deterred from getting in trouble. Mind you, she was only 2 months old. Headstrong from the start, my little red diva. I am a true glutton for punishment. Lol. Fast forward 4 years and I have to fight to get her off me. But she is still always looking to do something she shouldn't and is as headstrong as she was then. :)

I remember when I first brought Amigo home and didn't know anything about birds. He was starting to bond up with my teenage son at this time so Wyatt was his, mostly, handler.

His cage seemed way too small for him. Wyatt was at school, one morning, Amigo was complaining..so I opened his door! He climbed to the top of his cage and seemed to be happy about this so, I went to take my shower which is downstairs off my bedroom.

I get out of the shower and hear this LOUD, almost a vibration noise (which I learned later was my house crying in pain), I threw on my towel, ran upstairs to find most of the window sill and trim around the window..in matchstick size chunks, on the floor :(. Amigo is standing on the sill with a long stick of cedar framing in his foot and says, "Hi, there!"

This is the first time I had ever heard him say a word and the first time I discovered how destructive he could be. It was just the beginning!

I have so many memories!

I perfectly remember bringing Weasley home, even silly little details. I remember the first time that Peatree bit me, LOL.

When I got my first birds, I was pretty young. Weasley came first, who at the time I thought was a boy, and then I got Hermione (a girl) a few months later. Being young and silly, I thought it would be a wonderful idea to have a wedding for them since they got along so well. I decorated my desk, lined a aisle out of flowers, made a little peanut butter and seed cake, and dressed up all fancy. I brought all the family in my room, and made my dad do the ceremony. Weasley and Hermione were put in the middle of the aisle, we did the ceremony, pictures were taken, and then they had cake. Oh how I wish I could find those pictures. I know that there is a picture of me dressed up holding Weasley, and I think that is the only true picture I have of us together. I so badly want to find it.

I also had a Birthday party for Weasley! I bought her presents, I think I made her a cake, and made jello for the humans. LOL. We sat at the dining room table with my family, Weasley, Hermione, and Peatree, and sang happy Birthday and gave her presents. This was recorded, but again, I have no idea where the video is, or if it even got saved. :(

I could go on and on with memories of Weasley. :th_biggrin:

Another very special memory is when Grey Bird first stepped up for me. He had gotten off his cage, and didn't know how to get back up. So he asked me to help him by sticking his foot up for me to come get him. When he stepped up, I cried. I had been working with him for months, and he finally decided to trust me. It was a magical moment. :)

Mare and Maddy: I love your stories, Mare the bit about the house crying with pain was excellent, and Maddy the bit about Grey Birds first step up was quite emotional.
Chapter two of how Casper came to live with us:
After my father died we had a heck of a problem with my mum wanting to stay in a big run-down house that was miles from anywhere and needing 24 hour nursing from agency carers. We eventually persuaded (tricked?) her into going to stay in a care home whilst the drains were repaired. Once she was there and used to the idea, she admitted it was a much better for her. We sold the house quick before she could change her mind. That left us with the problem of what to do with Casper. We packed him off to stay with a couple of different people neither of whom could have him for long and it was when we were collecting him from the second house that he made it clear he wanted to be with Margaret, flying across the room to land on her shoulder (the first time he had flown for many years) - so Margaret and I looked at each other and agreed that we had better take him home with us.
It is amazing how such a spur-of-the-moment decision can totally alter your life.
We knew nothing about keeping a bird and were sure that everything we did was going to kill him, and we very nearly did, Margaret was fastidious about keeping the cage spotless and one day managed to spray Casper as well as the cage with something unsuitable leading to him spending over a week at the vet's
being a very poorly birdy. The vet told us later that he knew Casper was on the mend when he asked the vet "Can I help you?" one morning - he must have picked it up from hearing the receptionist.

Chapter three will be about how Casper eventually accepted me as a friend. Don't miss it. :)

This is a wonderful thread about the best experiences one can have with a bird in their life. Ups and downs true, but all good because it has make us all appreciate what special creatures they are.
