View Full Version : Silly Sayings Your Parrots Respond To

The other day I was snuggling with Rosie and said, "Give Mommy some sugar, Sugar.". Rosie immediately gave me kisses. Which was exactly what I wanted. But then it occurred to me that it is funny that I taught her that giving me some sugar means kisses.

So I am wondering, do you have any silly phrases that your parrot responds to? Or am I the only kooky one here? ;)

The only thing I come can think of is a lot of my birds call me BUBBA :)

Terri - love that!! Why do they call you Bubba? Is it something your family says or is it just something one parrot did and the others picked up?

Not exactly on topic but Casper, when he knows we are upset because he has just taken a chunk out of our flesh, will say "I'm a good boy" in the voice of a small child that sounds like it is locked in a cupboard. Its ever so cute and heart tearing but I am puzzled and concerned as to where he picked it up.

I have always felt that birds have not been given near enough credit for their cognitive abilities. I have two Barraband brothers. They were both affected by tainted handfeeding formula. Consequently, Joey was offered to me for free and PeeWee I paid a nominal fee for. It is clear that Joey has suffered some damage, however, he is as smart as can be when stringing words and phrases together. He can get over stimulated quickly and has unfortunately learned some inappropriate words. If he gets overstimulated, he will call me the B word, then tell himself "Joey is a stinker" followed by "Are you a nice boy JoJo? Yeah". He cracks everyone up with his antics and vocabulary.

Lexi,my Double head Amazon .Came from a house with a little boy.So as Amazon's are around hormonal time she would be loud and carrying on.I would tell her to cool it .She would always say "Hi Bubba" which would crack me up and I would make a big deal about it :) The other birds picked up on my reaction. They now use it too LOL

Sassy knows when it's time to shut down for the night. If I'm late getting in their room to close the curtains and turn off the lights..she will remind, I'll hear her from the kitchen saying, "Nite-nite..nite-nite, Sassy" and if Amigo starts screaming, she will very quietly say, "nite-nite, bird, nite-nite", over and over till I get in there to close them down..it's pretty precious :)

Some budgies are quite good talkers, do a search on YouTube. I seem to recall that it is just one sex that talks (males?). When I was a tiny kid we looked after our next door neighbours budgie whilst they went on holiday. Unfortunately it escaped (or died - I might have been deceived) so my mother bought another blue budgie that looked the same hoping that the neighbours wouldn't notice the difference. What they did notice was that the replacement could talk whereas the original couldn't. They thought my mother had taught it to talk.

Some budgies are indeed great talkers. Have a look at some of the archived videos of Dianne's male budgie, Chipper, talking (before he passed away). He used to talk up a storm... and quite clearly!

Jean-Pierre: Did your mother take the credit for teaching the replacement budgie to talk? ;)

I was only about three at the time so I don't recall but I think she had to fess up. I just remember the incident which gets trotted out sometimes when we're having a "do you remember when..."

I agree, Casper knows that Margaret is Margaret even though I rarely call her that. When he was living with my disabled mother she used to call Margaret when she wanted something and he calls in the same way knowing she will come. He never uses the names of anyone else like the carers or my dad whom she must have also called out for. He does say "Georgie boyo" sometimes. Presumably one of the carers called him that because when he is excited he recites the nursery rhyme Georgie Porgie puddin' and pie (his own version of course)

Traditional nursery rhyme words
Georgie Porgie, Puddin' and Pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play,
Georgie Porgie ran away

Casper's version
Casper: Georgie Porgie P-i-e
Us: Kissed the girls and made them cry
Casper: W-h-e-n the boys
Us: came out to play, Georgie Boyo flew away.
Casper: Shriek, woof.

Most humans really don't give any animals enough credit, imo. Just bc they can't speak human doesn't mean they aren't as intelligent as or more so than humans. The fact that they can understand us is a testament to that. Lord knows lots of humans can't read animals at all. Ok, enough of my mini rant on that...

JP - I love Caspers version.

Rosie doesn't use lots of words. She will say PEEK, waiting for me to say A BOO! She then expects me to say PEEK so she can say A BOO! It's one of her favorite things. It is usually followed by her version of I'm a Peek A Boo Baby, or I'm a Good Baby Girl...BEEP BEEP! :) We haven't gotten verbally advanced enough for nursery rhyme fill in the blanks. :)

Another thing which Salsa verbally responds to in a BIG way (but it's not a response to something I say, mind you) is when he notices new people, birds, or even other animals. He does it a lot while watching TV, and he'll even do it when I simply show him a still photograph. It's what he says that I love so much... I.E., whenever he sees someone who especially strikes his curiosity, he'll look over at me and say, "who's that?". The only problem is that when I answer him he typically says "who's that?" again. He's extremely prone to ask this question when he sees a parrot on TV or in a magazine or book that I'm holding - and it doesn't even have to be a macaw he sees. He in fact did this today just about an hour ago when he saw a scarlet macaw on an episode of Gilligan's Island (fwiw, the bird's name in the script was "Sam"). He became all excited and went off, saying: "who's that? ... "who's that!?" ... "WHO'S THAT!" He's quite entertaining :D

Right, I shall be watching G.I. with Casper. :)

Parrot's voice dubbed by Mel Blanc apparently, does he sound like Daffy Duck? I will enjoy finding out.

You know, there's something quite erroneous about the Gilligan's Island version of "Sam the Parrot" that we watched yesterday. It was shot in black and white but it happens to be one of the B&W episodes that someone superimposed color upon, and they got Sam's base color all wrong. Apparently whoever dialed in the color didn't know that scarlet macaws are mostly red birds and thus made Sam's base color green. It didn't seem to bother Salsa, though... he still wanted to know. "WHO'S THAT!?" :D
