View Full Version : I LOVE Summer, Rosie, Not So Much

I am soooo happy summer weather is here. I spend as much time as I can outside before it gets ghastly hot. Gardening, by the pool, in the gazebo...it's all good. I am sitting by the pool as I type this listening to the Margaritaville station...heaven.

Rosie does not share my enthusiasm. She hates going outside in her crate. She will hang from the middle of my back to avoid it 99% of the time. Ok, message received. This means she hangs in my room with the door closed or in her cage....alone. Without Mommy. There is music, toys, food, her favorite nuts...but no Mommy. She deals ok, but she is not happy.

So we agree to disgree. I love the sunshine and Rosie thinks it sucks.

Anyone else have a similar issue?

No talking her into a harness ? Or maybe build a bigger enclosure.

Hey Terri!! We had an incident getting her harness off her a few years ago. It was bad (the only time she has really bitten me). She is now terrified of just the sight of it. Since we have at least 2 hawks circling constantly, my vet discourages me using a harness regardless. Sigh.

I have a 2nd hand macaw sized kings cage outside for her but she hates it. She wants to be right next to me. I had the xl size dog crate by the pool so she could be next to me. It worked ok for a while. We had an incident where she got away from me on our way to it and flew off. (A hawk circled, she panicked and chaos ensued). I got her the only size wire crate I can carry in and out of the house which is small. I don't think she loves the crate, but I think being outside just makes her nervous. If I have her out with me she is jumpy and will actually scream with me 6 inches from her, even in the gazebo which has a roof. Poor girl.

My Blue and Gold Hates a harness. He will not allow me to put it over his head. I have tried everything for about 6 months and will continue. I might try the Dog Crate to get him outside with us. Great Idea.

I have a outside cage its just getting him to it safe is not going to happen :(

Sounds like you need an aviary with a safety door where you can take it outside in a carrier, walk in, close the first door behind you, take her out and open the aviary door then you both sit inside the aviary and enjoy the outdoors at least a little together.

Is it possible to setup the Kings Cage inside the Gazebo, Birds don't feel secure out in open space. It could possibly be the open space that makes her feel insecure. If you are up to it, set -up a "Macaw habitat" in your Gazebo add some Patio trees that are compatible for planting area surround the sides of the cage , that way she will feel secure but still look out from the front. it could be a tropical retreat. you might try letting her watch you decorate her new tropical retreat. Birds don't like to be in Direct Sun . Filtered Sun especially in the hottest part of the day. You could sit next to her sipping Pina~Coladas !

Suzanne - the gazebo is Jef's place to relax and there is no way he will let me remove patio furniture for her cage. Can't really blame him. The cage is right next to the gazebo - in a 4 foot or so space between the house and gazebo. I have given up on the cage. I am going to try to sell it I think. The crate goes in the gazebo with me. I put it on the coffee table in the middle and sit on the rocker next to it. We have sea grass that gets about 6 feet high for privacy around part of it. Right now it's only about 3 feet high. She still hates it. I think the hawk episode freaked her out.

I have just come to the conclusion that Rosie doesn't like being outside. My vet doesnt want me to take her out. Bc of the dangers, he doesn't feel it's worth it. I thought the crate thing was a good compromise. Rosie just doesn't enjoy it (however going for a car ride in her crate is another thing entirely - she LOVES it).

So we agree to disagree.

I guess that was really my question/conversation point. I should have said, does anyone have an issue with their parrot that they have just agreed to disagree on?

Many !!!! Let me count the ways... When I have time LOL. Kendra I think you stumbled upon a great Thread Topic

P.S. Rosie sounds more like a dog than a parrot...Maybe you could try taking her for a walk in the park :th_wink:

I, also, was going to suggest meshing the outside of the gazebo to keep Rosie inside...oh, well.

An outdoor aviary, that you can also sit in, Kendra. This might work for you and Rosie.

Hmmm... maybe get an old car shell, take out the windows and put in screen. Create a car shaped outdoor aviary! I may have let my imagination take me a bit far there though.

A[Users must be registered and logged in to view attached photos or hyperlinks] that is a shame she doesn't like going outside.

My birds enjoy spending time outside. We have a screened in patio, and I will take Jester and Grey Bird out there and they both love it! The conures go out in a little cage, and they enjoy it also. Peatree likes to screech back to the wild birds! :)

Try touching him all over. When you feel like you have bonded more .Take him in the bathroom on your knee and put it on.Something about the more enclosed environment.

Kendra, it sounds like you have the perfect set up to have Rosie outside with you....go figure that she would make it difficult. I would love to get all of my birds outside for fresh air and sunshine, but there are too many to do that safely where we are now. We are moving in two months and hopefully I will be able to build an outdoor aviary for the birds and a separate one for the cats.

And I can't imagine being bit by a macaw....that's why I stick to the smaller birds. I have a big beak phobia!

Helena, You will love the outdoor aviary. They are safe and will be able to enjoy the great-outdoors.

When I've taken Lady outside in her crate she was very quiet and a bit nervous of her surroundings. But when she's on the indoor porch, she is just as she is inside the house. For her I think she just needs to go out more often and hope to have more opportunities to get her there this summer.

I can understand Jeff not wanting you to turn his space into a space for Rosie, he needs a safe and relaxing spot to unwind too.

Maybe if and when you put the second hand cage away you will find you have space for something else that will work when you and Rosie have time to yourselves.
If the incident that happened is what may have frightened her of the outdoors it may take some time and getting use to for her to feel safe there in the future.
