We live on 160 acres in the middle of nowhere so.. when you have a horse that needs to be put down, you dig a huge hole and do the deed. This may need to be in the controversial topics section, let's see..

Tim got out the backhoe tractor and anyways..three days later the buzzards are circling. Amigo's been having fits all day long about these buzzards! Tim had to re-cover the old gal..the coyotes had done some digging.

I found it distressing and amusing at the same time, how Amigo flew around the property, yelling at these intrusive buzzards, knowing that he is scared to death of them. They set his alarm system off the WORST!

I think Amigo is safe while he is alive and screaming. :)

How deep did Tim go with the back-hoe, the historical/literary cover for humans is six feet. Perhaps scraping some topsoil off and covering with a tarp before backfilling would put them off the scent. Plus dig lots of decoy holes and watch the confusion.

The buzzards are gone, Amigo had a quiet restful day today, not a lot going on in the neighborhood :)

Jean-Pierre, Tim says he could only get down to around five feet with the tractor before hitting rock. After she was buried, he also added another two feet of soil to the top. There's some kind of powdery substance that he covers the body with,,may be dolomite..?.. He's not sitting here to ask but I think that's what it is?..

Buzzards = Natures housekeepers.,
When the body is shutting down. Process of dying the body releases ketones. " smell of dying" . Vultures sense of smell is akin to it.

So sorry you had to put down one of your horses, I know the loss of every animal is heartfelt be it hamster or horse. Glad things are better for Amigo, I imagine having so many intruders flying around would be scary.

Suzanne, we grow grapes but not for wine :). There are vineyards in the area but they grow best, more on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, closer to the Pacific air, in my opinion :)
