Keeping Old World Parrots with New World Parrots in a collection has been somewhat of a challenge for aviculturists', does it really impose a significant health issue to be housed in the same area ?

An interesting question, I have seen pictures of Amazons and and African greys that have the same owner and interact with each other. They seem to be doing all right but are they storing up problems for the future?

Its my understanding the old world birds produce the powder down while the new world birds do not. This can be a health hazard to some species in new world birds like Macaws. So the two species should really not be mixed.

Being that NW and OW have evolved so differently and come from such different regions it makes sense they would not thrive without problem with the other. NW comes from damp, temperate regions of the rainforest while OW thrive in dry, arid conditions.

Do I feel housing them together imposes a significant health issue? YES! A big reason for me; it imposes a deadly issue for Macaws that may have an allergy to the powder of the Old World Parrots. The odds may favor that most Macaws may not have the sensitivity to the powder but there is no way of knowing until the damage has been done. There is no cure for Pulmonary Hypersensitivity Syndrome.

Therefore I agree 100% with the statement from the Winged Wisdom site;

In order to prevent Pulmonary Hypersensitivity Syndrome, Macaws should be housed in well ventilated rooms - WITHOUT cockatoos, cockatiels or African greys.

Old world and new world parrots,,this is a new term to me. My four birds are the powdery type so I think they're safe but I'll tell you..even with air purifiers throughout the house, I'm scared that I might be getting allergies from their dust :(

As are mine, all Cockatoos including Cockatiels. No worries with them being housed together. Old World means... Africa, Indonesia, Asia Major, Asia Minor, Australia , New Zealand, And so on... New World are the Americas... South America, Central America, Mexico is part of North America.

A cockatoo is a parrot that is any of the 21 species belonging to the bird family Cacatuidae, the only family in the superfamily Cacatuoidea. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes (parrots). The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia.
