I was watching a documentary about Spain where they are in a program of removing all the old, forgotten and unlicensed dams from their rivers to restore some of the natural flows and help prevent silting. They are taking out hundreds of dams which is only a small percentage of the national total. Every little helps.
You would think that the wine industry changing from corks to screw caps wouldn't have much effect on bird species but in Spain and Portugal cork oak orchards are being abandoned in large numbers and without the trees there is a species of owl that was dependent upon them which is much depleted. I suppose, as the cork trees where planted in large numbers by humans this is just nature returning to the status quo but not good news if you are an owl.

I live on the East Coast of United States and the state I live in has a large agricultural and poultry business. The Federal and State government just put into affect this year how much fertilizer can be used and what kind of fertilizer. They have also banned certain kinds from being sold in commercial garden stores. It is sad that it took them this long to realize what an imprint we have on our water ways.
I love owls, they are in my top 3 favorite birds, I hope that the owls in the cork tree habitats can be saved.
