I always cringe inside , when someone asks WOW! WHAT A COOL BIRD OR I WANT ONE ! how much does that bird cost, I am lost for words because I really hate to disclose how much!

We took Charlie out for the first time yesterday, we had him out in the vets office and then we had him out in PetSmart (that was my husbands idea, i wanted to keep him in his travel carrier but Charlie did really well).
People smiled at us but no one asked any questions. I do not know if I would tell them how much Charlie cost (I am still a little amazed by how much he cost myself even though he is worth every cent!)
I don't know if I would tell people, it is really none of their business.

I would give the person who ask that question a silly answer like "several million dollars". Its really no ones business.
When I was much younger and took my twin daughters out in a double stroller for a walk people would always as me "are they twins" when it was perfectly obvious. After several times I began to give them a silly answer "No, I have two husbands".

You know, I have never had anyone ask me, but I don't take mine out in public...Yet...
I think it would depend on why someone was asking me. If they were interested in getting one and just inquiring so they would know the price range, I would be fine with that. If they were just being nosey, I would probably just smile and change the subject.
My husband and I used to raise African cichlids from Lake Malawi. We had a friend who actually went on dives there and helped to collect them from the lake to return to Canada to sell. We were first in line when he got back with the wild ones, and always got first pick, but goodness, I would never tell anyone what we paid for some of those fish!

Oh I never take them out in public, it's when people come in to my home... it makes me nervous because I've heard stories of peoples birds being stolen. I'm a rather privet person, but on the occasion, let's say some home repairs , repair men / handy men, ask it put's me on edge.

I love telling people... as a deterrent.
I guess it's different because the only bird currently at home (rescue pending) is a single very clever standard budgie. People love to ask what goes into keeping one, usually with a dreadful story about how their family had one for a week before it died :c
I love seeing their horrified expressions as I outline every step of "My 1,100 dollar 15 dollar bird!". Cage, food, vet office charge, three different tests, toys, play stands, perches, clipping/trimming tools, books, feeders, treats, travel cage, boarding fee for holiday family trip, bells, whistles...

Suzanne I agree with you, I would not want to tell people how much our bird cost for the very same reason. If people ask I just ignore it and move on. It really is none of their business.

Dianne you are hilarious! I would have done the same thing if I had twins. I don't tell people how much Charlie was, it is none of their business. I just ignore it and move on.
Interesting question. I think it also depends on who is asking. For the most part I would have to respond with a question. Why, are you thinking about purchasing a parrot? Cost in dollars or in time and dedication to a parrot is a much different answer. Maybe I would simply say it depends on many factors, like how old the bird is, and where you get them from.
If an unknown person was entering my home for repairing something or another reason I think I would keep Lady from their sight. If they heard her then maybe the answer would be totally different.

If I was out with Nike and some random person asked, I'd probably just tell them as it requires less thinking than lying. A repair man...not that I'd ever need one, I'd just be vague.
Edit: And if it was a family member I'd make up a rather large but believable number just to see their reaction ;)
