Over the years, Amigo's hole in the tree has been a curious spot for many critters to investigate. He's had raccoons, hawks, ravens, turkeys, woodpeckers and these are only the ones I've seen, until now.. Amigo is inside in his cage so Chester the cat knew the coast was clear and is taking a peek :). I would love to see what it looks like down there!

Hope they do not run into a Hawk nest! We have a Coopers Hawk here and it has a large territory. Oh my goodness is it magnificent and huge!

He is a perfect example that it is possible to cross the boundaries of wild vs. domestic. About the hole in the tree...what about renting a cherry picker or tree trimming trucks, second thought they probably cost arm and leg. I was reading a story about someone's bird getting out and landed high up in a tree, was stuck up there all night they were worried sick about all the dangers, bird was afraid to come down they tried everything to coax bird down to no avail. Finally ended up having to rent a cherry picker to retrieve bird, they were one of the lucky ones.

Dianne, I can see this tree from my living room and know that there is no Cooper's hawk in the tree. They are definitely a huge concern, a very aggressive hawk with a distinct whistle. A couple of years ago we had a family of them fly into the area, I could tell they were fledglings. There were three young that pestered their parents for a around a week, mostly early morning. Of course, I kept Amigo inside through this time.

I can't remember where I read it but hawks will lead there young away and then try and DUMP them in a new area. I suppose for territory and food supply sake. I was happy to see this group move on.

Mare - it just occurred to me to ask if Amigo can see his tree from his cage? If so, Chester better keep both eyes open when Amigo is out again. I know my friend Amigo has a temper. Lol.

Jean-Pierre, this poor tree has seen better days, that's for sure! Tim and I are amazed that it's still standing!

Kendra, ME, TOO!! I think it would take something like a colonoscopy camera to get to the bottom of it, though :). He crawls down it at least ten feet.
Oh! Yes, he can see his tree from his cage and these intruders are very upsetting to him!! The cats fear him like he was a monster!!..which he is..:)

Suzanne, when Amigo first started to fly, there were a few times we had to get the extender ladder out to retrieve him..he didn't know, at that time, how to fly down. My son has offered to climb up with the help of a ladder, to get a few pics for me but I'm guessing it probably just looks dark and not much to see but you don't know till you try, I guess :)

(I can't remember where I read it but hawks will lead there young away and then try and DUMP them in a new area ) Sounds like what my Mother tried to do with me !!!!! LOL :eeeek:
We have Red Tailed hawks around here, They come from the pines around here and drink from my pond, we also have Egrets and great Blue Herron's. The great Blue claimed my pond as his sushi bar, I loved to watch him, beautiful bird, but eating my fish was not an option, I hated to put a pond net it takes away from the naturalized look . He was so surprised when he stopped in for breakfast that first time. It was so funny watching him land on the net bouncing up and down like a trampoline, looking around like what the heck is this ! so funny, he still stops by to check-up. Stinker!

In the previous place I lived which is not far away from here the Coopers Hawk staked out the dumpster in the deep part of winter when the snow was covering the ground. He sat like a stone on a branch very close to the dumpster. Then when a critter crawled in the dumpster (usually a squirrel ) he would strike. Pretty clever! There call is very loud.

Super smart and cunning birds, Dianne. Suzanne, I've written many Amigo stories, they are in the archives of this forum, mostly under free flight and cockatoos, I believe. I'm writing my memoirs of life with Amigo that I hope to someday try and publish. Most folks here have already read what I've had to say and I don't think fair to them to do it again :). Thank you for your interest, he's a special bird..no more special than anyone else's or Sassy, Chip and Jellybean..he's just different.

Thank you for the early morning giggle Charlie. I can just picture Amigo with peace signs, a velvet perch and a disco ball having a blast in his tree. Lol

You know, if we could have tried giving Sucre more freedom, we may have been able to make it work. (He could have gotten away from me and I could have had a few minutes / hours of safety inside my home.) But I'm not sure how you know when a bird has the personality type to do this? Did you find out by accident? Or did he come to you that way?

Hawks are terrible here right now, our local news is warning everyone daily not to allow anything less than 12 lbs outside unsupervised. A lady lost her 3 lb Chihuahua to one less than an hour from here last week, and when my Chi was a baby (on a leash) we had hawks after her all of the time.

We had some stalking my yorkie - bichon when she was a puppy. I can't stand them. They circle our neighborhood daily.

Hi, Kim :). When the Hawks are migrating, they can be thick around here, too. We keep Amigo in at this time. They'll occasionally fly through but as of yet, they haven't moved into his territory.

Amigo didn't come to us flighted and he was aggressive, he would attack any man that came near me. We slowly introduced him to the great outdoors and it was just what he needed. His personality is aggressive and fearless enough to take on the rigors of being outside. It's not something for all of our pet birds but it's perfect for him. Sucre sounds a lot like Mi Amigo.
