So I'm on the west coast for business and I get a series of texts from my wife.

"Need to get Nike's wings clipped"

"She flew from the living room to her cage"

"All the animals scattered when they heard the noise"

My reply.
"Nike is clipped!"

So apparently she flew about twenty feet, through two doorways, to the top of her cage. In the past the most she has been able to manage is a controlled crash from my shoulder to the floor.

Her wings were clipped (poorly) by the original owner who removed half of all her primary feathers.....and none have been replaced yet so I have no idea how she did it except that since she is small and since she was about 4+ feet up at the top of her play stand, may she was able to stay airborne until she got near her cage and then climbed to the top.

Anyway, I need to figure out what happened as I really don't want her flying around as our old house isn't bird safe...as well as because of the other animals.

That Nike is determined! Your wife must have been really startled. I can image the chaos of Nike flying and all the other animals running in panic. :)

She may have grown back enough flights that she can gain height. I always thought when you have other animals in your home a bird should be able to fly so they can get away from any predators like dogs and cats. If they are clipped they may not be able to get away.

My Nash did the same thing sorta! He had only 4 new flight feathers at the time, the rest were previously clipped by the person I got him from and he managed to fly from his cage to my bed gracefully... Birds can be tricky!

Sounds like she has some strong wings and a lot of determination! Personally, I think it's good for a birds psyche to be able to fly :)

Has she been learning about bumble bees?

Got to watch that bill. My first parrot Skylar flew away one day and we thought his wings were clipped. Ordinarily he would just flop to the ground much like any bird that has been clipped. but he and I were outside on our way to the laundromat when a big semi trailer hit its air brakes and scared poor parrot so much that it took off and flew away never to be seen again by mortal man. Better to be safe then sorry when it comes to wing clipping.

Guess Nike will be getting a physical when you get home. But I think maybe the height she was coming from (as well as her wanting to be on her cage) might have a lot to do with her ability to get there.

"It's amazing what one can accomplish when one doesn't know what one can't do"..quote by..somebody

This poster hung in my youngest boy's room, from 3rd grade on. When he moved to a different room I was going to roll it up and just put it away. No, he wanted to keep it going. When he left for college, I asked if he was going to take it? He said, "No, I got what I needed from it".. He is now in med-school. Holy Moly, let your birds fly!

Nice quote. I think your right, unless someone says you can't do that, most will try a see for themselves whether or not they can.

It was actually about 40 feet with 3 turns, pretty impressive. Her wings are clipped (badly) so I guess it's a combination of strong wings and small body which allowed her to fly. Certainly it is a lesson better learned in the house than outside.
