Using ferret cage for birds?

Has anyone used a big ferret cage for birds? They are so big and the prices are lower than bird cages. They have slide out grates and trays too. I am well aware to look for the bar spacing and material the cage is made out of. Most are actually the same material as bird cages, either powder coated or wrought iron. I'm not currently planning to buy one, but I wanted to know for the future.

This question came up before on a bird forum. The resounding answer is to use only bird cages for birds. Ferret cages may not be safe or make of safe materials.
