View Full Version : So a question occurred to me...

I was working on designing new toys with Easter coming up and I was thinking about how Kiki's favorite colors were oranges and yellows like her, but then another bird I know has a huge preference for blue, and he is very, very green. That made me wonder if birds tend to prefer their own color or different colors.

So here is my question: does your bird have a consistent preference for one color over another, and does that color match their feathers?

Very cool observation!

Rosie shows almost no interest in her toys. So I have not noticed her preferring one color over another.

Ruby likes her ant, it had blue, red, green that I know of... Same color as her. She pretty much annhilated it though, I will buy her another one just like it.

Jazzy eats a lot so I've only seen her play with the treat toy that is edible.

As for my budgies they love perching too much to play.

The only one of my 4 who seems especially responsive to color is Zaffer. He came to me very afraid of colored toys. But he still tended to flip out in a pleasurably evil way over red objects. That is, he would lustfully attack them in hard play mode. He has always loved to attack the red broom handle. And he is consistently enthralled to cautiously sneak up upon every red toy he can find for a violent assault. Even to this day, Zaf's favorite object to attack is an old red DirtDevil hand-vac that doesn't work anymore. In case you're wondering, although he frequently loves to peck Salsa (whose predominant color is bright red) on the top of his head, he has never shown the craziness over Salsa's color which he aggressively demonstrates toward red inanimate objects. I'm unsure just why that may be... perhaps because inanimate objects can't peck back :indecisiveness:? So to answer your basic question... Zaf is blue, but it's red that drives him nutty as far as his toys ;)

Well Nash's cage theme is green, I like to make it consistent so a lot of his toys, perches, and hides are green/yellow.. and he kinda seems to prefer the green, just like himself. He does have different colors in his cage but the majority of it, and the toys he does show slight interest in are green. He won't eat green veggies though so that puzzles me.. haha :P

My birds were initially in fear of red colors until they discovered red peppers. So all colors are acceppted without issues now.

No color issues here! :)

I don't see Lady having an issue with any color but she always goes for the bright colors first with both toys and food. She is mostly green with some blue, red and yellow in her feathers as well.

I wore blue gloves today to clean out Ruby's cage before we left to take her to the vet and she flipped! I thought what in the world Ruby its me dear, hubby said doctors wear those color gloves. I figured oh she might think I'm after her so I swiftly removed them. I usually wear clear gloves but the store only had blue. :/ so Ruby hates blue gloves. As for jazzy no color fears yet.

Kiki had issues with red sometimes too! She would always say it was hot and try and blow on it, which is an interesting thing to see with a beak instead of lips. It kind of sounds to me like parrots may be even more individual in their color preferences than people are. It sounds like they might lean a little towards their own color, but there is so much else going on in those exquisite little minds, like associating blue gloves with doctors, or red being scary until it's food.

I have always wished I could know what a bird is thinking, feeling or not. So much is instinct. Fear of red can be associated with a predator. I knew one person who bought a red cage because it matched the furniture. Her bird refused to go inside the cage. She sent it back and got another color.

My husband's conure seems to show favoritism to red toys, and I have a lovebird who thinks all green toys must be destroyed, but I haven't figured out which one it is yet. (Probably Saffron - she's my problem child.)
