Oh my goodness those feet look huge to me. Of course I am used to little feet.

What is the chance that the bird doesn't come back or that you spend hours coaxing him back?

Oh my goodness those feet look huge to me. Of course I am used to little feet.Yep, Hy feet are good sized. And Zaf's are no exception. When Dr. McD examined him the first words from his mouth were: "BIG feet!" One benefit of Zaf's large feet is that they give me more to grab and hang on to for safety. Upon the times he has become startled and thus leaped into flight from my shoulder, I have usually been able to intercept his departure by grabbing his huge feet.

What is the chance that the bird doesn't come back or that you spend hours coaxing him back?I think it depends upon how well and correctly trained the individual birds happen to be, as well as upon the environment particulars where the free flight events are taking place. I do not free fly my birds, nor would I feel comfortable doing so. But it's certainly magnificent to observe :D

I would imagine that training them would almost have to be your full time job.

I would imagine that training them would almost have to be your full time job. Some folks are really into it and have great success.

Free flying your bird is a definite commitment! Once they are trained and accustomed to the routine, piece of cake..except for the fear factor of losing them to a hawk. That fear never goes away.

I have always liked watching them fly, I look forward to when the geese fly over and make all their honking calls. Parrots have more of a majestic flight with grace and ease when they're one or two. I have seen them in flocks making tons of noise. Guess they have a lot of backseat drivers :th_biggrin:!
